SOME EXCITING NEWS FROM THE SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM. WE HAD ABOUT 1600 STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN OUR SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM. AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE TWO PROVIDERS WE WORK WITH. THE BIG BROTHERS -- THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB AND -- [00:10:06] I HAVE BROKEN IT DOWN TO GIVE YOU A GENERAL IDEA. WITH OUR EXTENDED LEARNING PROGRAM FOR BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB, YOU WILL SEE IT WAS ABOUT 329 STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATED OVER THE SUMMER. SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES THEY PARTICIPATED IN INCLUDED STATE PROGRAMS, PROGRAMMING, ARTS AND CRAFTS AND LITERACY PROGRAMS , ROBOTICS, LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS. BOARD GAMES, AND FOCUSING ON IT -- CHOICES. SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTED ITEMS. -- THOSE WERE WEEKLY EVENT IT SEEMS. CLUB SELLER -- THEY FOCUSED ON MUSIC AND DANCE. WITH OUR EXTENDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, ALMOST 1300 SCHOLARS PARTICIPATED OVER THE SUMMER. AND VERY SIMILAR TO THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB, STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN TWO MAJOR FIELD TRIPS . -- AND NOT VERY FARMS , ALIGNED WITH THEIR WESTERN HISTORY THEME. SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED IN STUDENTS ENGAGE IN TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES. THEY LEARNED A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT DANCING SKILLS . THEIR CULMINATING ACTIVITY WENT INTO AN END OF THE SUMMER TALENT SHOW. GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING. APPLAUSE ] >> GOOD EVENING . I HAVE THE PLEASURE OF TALK TO YOU TONIGHT ABOUT OUR EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAM. BEFORE I START GIVING YOU SOME INFORMATION, I WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO OUR STAFF. WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE BRING IT TOGETHER. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN RUN BY ONE OF OUR COORDINATORS FOR PROBABLY THE PAST DECADE. SHE DOES AN EXCELLENT JOB, ALONG WITH OFFICE STAFF -- THEY ARE THE ONES THAT PUT ALL THIS TOGETHER FOR US. IT'S A PROGRAM WE ARE REQUIRED TO OFFER FOR STUDENTS THAT MAY EXPERIENCE LEARNING LOSS DURING THE EXTENDED BREAK. -- SO THEY CAN RECOVER SOME OF THAT LOSS. WE TYPICALLY HAVE HELD IT HISTORICALLY AT -- PRESCHOOL THROUGH MIDDLE SCHOOL. THIS YEAR, WE DECIDED TO SEND -- TO ONE OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL TO INTRODUCE THEM TO THE TRANSITION. -- IS AT PRIMROSE. THE FACILITY HAS -- TO MEET OUR STUDENTS' NEEDS. WE PLAN ON KEEPING THAT PARTNERSHIP. WE ALSO HAVE PROGRAMS IN ALL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS FOR OUR HIGH STOOL -- SCHOOL STUDENTS. WE ALSO HAVE A TRANSITION PROGRAM. WE HAVE SERVED APPROXIMATELY 410 STUDENTS ALTOGETHER. DURING THE PROGRAM, WE OFFER THE SAME SERVICES AS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. THE PURPOSE OF THE GRANT IS -- PROGRAM IS ALLOWED SOME OF THE -- OUR CULMINATING EVENT, WHICH THE KIDS GET SUPER EXCITED ABOUT, MAKE NO MISTY LANE JONES. SHE HELPED TO CONNECT US WITH CHP, FONTANA POLICE DEPARTMENT , THE COUNTY SHERIFF'S . AND THEY COME TO PRIMROSE, AND THEY BRING EQUIPMENT. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS ALSO THERE. -- THEY ALLOW THE KIDS TO TALK -- TOUCH THEM OF THEIR FIELD EQUIPMENT. I WANTED TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO MISTY JONES. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE. I LOOK FORWARD TO SHARE EVEN MORE ABOUT THE GREAT THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING. >> GOOD EVENING -- I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH YOU [00:15:07] ABOUT OUR -- PROGRAM ARE OUR K -5 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS. I DO WANT TO NOTE THIS IS A THREE-YEAR PROCESS. OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS, WE'VE HAD STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. THIS SUMMER, WE LEARNED ABOUT KENYA , JAPAN, CANADA AND PERU. AND ALL THE CONNECTION WAS DONE THROUGH MAPS , SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION AND SEL AND LITERACY. ONE OF THE THINGS WE WANTED TO PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY WAS, WE PROVIDED PASSPORT BOOKS SO STUDENTS DID VIRTUAL VISITS. THEY GOT TO HAVE IMMERSIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE. THE GOAL WAS TO PROVIDE A DIFFERENT LEARNING EXPERIENCE THAN TRADITIONAL SCHOOL SETTINGS THAT THEY GET DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES AND CULTURES, AND HOW THEY ARE SIMILAR AND MAY DIFFER. AND FIGURE OUT WHAT PIECES STOOD OUT TO THEM AS LEARNERS . THE GREAT THING WE DID WAS INCORPORATE LITERACY. AND STUDENTS HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO HAVE A NONFICTION AND FICTION TEXT READ TO THEM THAT WERE RELATED TO THE COUNTRIES THAT THEY STUDIED. WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE CAMPFIRE STORIES, WERE THE BOOKS WERE READ TO THEM AND THE STUDENTS WERE IMMERSED AND PARTICIPATED IN THE COLLABORATIVE DISCUSSIONS. THAT WAS OUR CONNECTION TO THE LISTENING AND SPEAKING -- ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT COUNTRIES . THE POWERPOINT YOU WILL SEE HAS A LOT OF PICTURES BECAUSE WE WANT TO SHOW ALL THE GREAT THINGS THAT HAPPENED. PART OF THIS PROCESS, WE SERVED ABOUT 2800 K -5 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AT ALL 30 OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS THIS YEAR. TO DO THAT, WE HAD TO HAVE THE SUPPORT OF 127 TEACHERS. WE HAD A 90 CLASSIFIED STAFF MEMBERS FOR SUPPORT. THAT CONSISTED OF CLERKS, CUSTODIAN AND OUR SCHOOL SITE A.I.D.S. -- WE HAD ACCOUNTS WITH THE HELP OF THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL CONNECTION. AND SIX ADMINISTRATORS WHO WERE DIVIDED UP. AGAIN, IT'S A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT TO MAKE THIS PROCESS HAPPEN. WE HAVE DIFFERENT PICTURES. THIS IS AT -- ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. WE TOOK SO MANY PICTURES IT WAS HARD TO DECIDE WHICH ONES TO INCLUDE. WE TRY TO INCLUDE AS MANY AS WE COULD. HIGHLIGHT THE AMAZING WORK DUNES WERE DOING. THEY HAD A STEAM KIT EVERY WEEK. AND IN THE KIDS, THEY ALSO HAD PROJECTS THAT WERE BASED ON THE LEARNING ABOUT THE COUNTRY. FOR EXAMPLE, ONCE, THEY WERE MAKING BRACES FOR KENYA AND THE PIC BE THAT REPRESENT PROSPERITY, HAPPINESS, LONGEVITY. -- AND THEY WERE ABLE TO TAKE THE KIDS HOME TO SHOW THEIR FAMILIES, TO EXTEND THAT LEARNING. OF COURSE, WE HAD MATH INTEGRATION. WE WANTED TO FOCUS ON FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE ABLE TO VISUALIZE AND -- AND BE ABLE TO EXPRESS THEIR THINKING IN MASS -- MATH . EVERY WEEK, THEY HAD A ESTIMATION CHALLENGE WHERE THEY HAD SOMETHING TO ESTIMATE. THEY WENT AROUND TO MAKE A GUESS IS. IF THE ESTIMATION WAS TOO LOW, TOO HIGH OR JUST RIGHT. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE FROM GRANT ELEMENTARY, FIFTH GRADE. STUDENTS COLLABORATING AROUND MATH. AGAIN, THE KIDS WERE HANDS-ON. AND FOR PERU, THEY HAD TO DO A PROJECT ON A -- THE STUDENTS REALLY ENJOYED THAT. THEY WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THAT. EACH COUNTRY WAS HIGHLIGHTED EVERY WEEK. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE FROM -- FOR FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE. THEY MADE A SNOW GLOBE THAT CONNECTED TO POWERSCHOOL GROUP LLC. AND PUTTING IT TOGETHER AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO PUT THE PARTS TOGETHER. THERE WAS DEFINITELY ARTS AND MUSIC CONNECTION IN OUR STEAM PROGRAM. WE HAD SOME RHYTHM STICKS THAT STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS GOT TO EXPERIENCE AND ENJOY. IT WAS HIGHLIGHTING THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A BRAIN BREAK , AND DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE READING AND WRITING THEY ARE USED TO. REALLY TAKING A MOMENT TO STEP AWAY SO THEY CAN STEP BACK INTO THE LEARNING AND BE [00:20:01] ENGAGED. SOME MORE PICTURES FROM OUR KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE . THE ENGAGEMENT WAS THERE, EMBEDDED INTO THE PROGRAM IS TEACHER WEEKLY PD. SOME OF THE STRATEGIES THEY LEARNED THROUGH THE SUMMER PROGRAM, THEY ARE STILL IMPLEMENT THE STRATEGIES IN THE CLASSROOMS DURING THE REGULAR SCHOOL YEAR. WE HAVE A PICTURE OF OUR ADMINISTRATIVE -- ADMINISTRATOR. THIS WAS ONE YEAR, ONE OF THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS FROM CYPRUS APPLY TO BE A SUMMER SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR. HE GOT TO SEE DIFFERENT CAMPUSES AND LEARN HOW OTHER SCHOOLS IN FONTANA WORK. WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS, IT WAS A TRUE PARTNERSHIP TO MAKE IT HAPPEN FROM OUR -- FOR APPROVING ALL THE WRECKS, TO GET ALL THE ITEMS IN STUDENTS HAND. OUR FOOD AND SERVICE DEPARTMENTS WHO MADE THE CONNECTIONS AND OFFERED A FOOD ITEM CONNECTED TO COUNTRIES. WHEN WE LEARNED ABOUT JAPAN, WE HAD A STICKY RICE. WHEN WE LEARNED ABOUT KENYA, THEY HAD A DIFFERENT ITEM. IT WAS A TRUE COLLABORATIVE EFFORT. I THINK IT HIGHLIGHTS THE PARTNERSHIP WE HAVE IN FONTANA. THERE WAS A LOT OF MEETINGS AND PLANNING. BUT TO PROVIDE THE STUDENTS THIS EXPERIENCE IS WORTH WHAT WE DID. I THINK THAT WAS EVERYTHING. THIS IS A VIDEO OF THE ADMINISTRATORS USING THE RHYTHM STICKS. >> THAT WAS JUST AN EXAMPLE OF THE ADMINISTRATORS AT THE LAST DAY TO SHOW THEY CAN ALSO USE THE RHYTHM STICKS TO TAKE A BRAIN BREAK. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. >> THANK YOU. AND THE TEAM FOR THAT AMAZING REPORT. I CAN SAY I'VE GOT TO ATTEND A FEW OF THOSE EVENTS DURING THE SUMMER. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU ALL DID OVER THE SUMMER. IT REALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE TO THE SCHOLARS. ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS BEFORE I MOVE FORWARD ? >> I HAVE TO SAY THANK YOU AS WELL. MY GRANDKIDS ATTENDED CANYON CREST. ONE OF THE GRANDCHILDREN STILL HAVE THE ITEMS THEY MADE. AND THEY TAKE THEM OUT. TOMMY STILL HAS HIS BRACELET. AND HE LOVES THAT BRACELET. I WROTE A NOTE AND I WILL ASK HIM WHY HE CHOSE THOSE COLORS. THE BOYS ENJOYED IT. I MUST SAY, THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE EMPLOYEES THAT WORKED THIS SUMMER AND GAVE IT TO OUR KIDS. WE APPRECIATE THAT. THANK YOU. >> ANYONE ELSE ? I AM GOING TO GO DOWN TO THE PODIUM. I HAVE SOME EXCITING TONIGHT. >> 3.6, STUDENT BOARD MEMBER INSULATION. IT GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE ADRIANA RENEE HUMBER . PRESIDENT SERNA WILL CONDUCT THE INSTALLATION FOR THE 2025 STUDENT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER . >> I WILL HOLD THE MIC. -- WILL HOLD THE BIBLE FOR YOU. DOES MOM WANT TO BE UP TOO? YOU CAN SET UP WERE EVER YOU LIKE. SECURITY IS NOT GOING TO GET YOU. WE ARE GOOD. HERE I GO. I NEED YOU TO STATE YOUR NAME. >> I, ADRIANA RENEE HUMBER -- PLEDGE TO FULFILL MY DUTIES AS STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE. TO THE FONTANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION. SERVING AS A LIAISON BETWEEN THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. >> AND ALL THE FONTANA STUDENTS DURING THE 2024 AND 2025 SCHOOL YEAR. >> AND ALL THE FONTANA STUDENTS [00:25:06] DURING THE 2024 AND 2025 SCHOOL YEAR. >> TO PROVIDE INSIGHT AND SUPPORT. >> TO THE BOARD'S UNDERSTANDING. >> OF STUDENT ISSUES AND PERSPECTIVES. >> YOU ARE NOW INDUCTED TO OUR BOARD. CONGRATULATIONS . APPLAUSE ] >> TO SOLIDIFY THE -- THIS IS THE OFFICIAL -- OF YOUR PLEDGE. YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO COME UP. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE HER SIGN THE PLEDGE. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PICTURES AND A PHOTO OF HER SIGNING THE PLEDGE, PLEASE FOLLOW ME UP HERE. HERE IS THE OFFICIAL PLEDGE. YOU WILL HAVE TO SIGN THEIR. ALL RIGHT, YOU ARE NOW OFFICIALLY A STUDENT BOARD MEMBER AT FONTANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT . CONGRATULATIONS. FROM A -- HER PRINCIPAL IS IN THE HOUSE. CONGRATULATIONS TO -- AND THE ENTIRE FAMILY, WHO IS HERE THIS EVENING. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TO SUPPORT HER. >> NORMALLY, BECAUSE THE PUBLIC COMMENT. BUT I WANT TO GIVE YOU A MOMENT TO SAY A FEW WORDS. IF YOU WANT TO GO INTO YOUR OPENING STATEMENTS TODAY, I AM SWITCHING PUBLIC COMMENT TO YOUR COMMENT FIRST-PERIOD SINCE YOUR APPEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME, WE WILL ALLOW YOU TO SAY A FEW WORDS. >> YOU WILL NEED TO -- WE WILL TRAIN HER ON THE BUTTON. THERE YOU GO. >> HI, EVERYONE. I FIRST WANT TO THANK THE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR ALLOWING ME TO DO THIS OPPORTUNITY. I FIRST WANT TO THANK MY FAMILY AND MY FRIENDS AND THE PUBLIC AS WELL FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT. I HOPE TO MAKE THE SCHOOL YEAR AN EXCELLENT ONE. I'M SO EXCITED FOR THE NEW OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE , AND HEARING WHAT WE HAVE DONE OVER THE SUMMER MAKES ME EXTREMELY GRATEFUL AND HAPPY THAT WE HAVE MADE SO MUCH PROGRESS ALREADY. AND I THANK EVERYONE FOR THE AMOUNT OF SUPPORT YOU GUYS HAVE GIVEN ME. I HOPE TO MAKE THIS ONE A GOOD ONE. THANK YOU. IF YOU NEED ANYTHING, ANY CONCERNS, I HOPE TO MAKE SOME POSITIVE CHANGES AROUND THE SCHOOL. THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH AND CONGRATULATIONS FOR BEING SELECTED. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SERVING YOU THIS SCHOOL YEAR. WE CAN CLAP . ARE GOING TO LISTEN TO OUR PUBLIC , THIS IS 3.7. OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC COMMENT. WE WELCOME COMMENTS FROM THE COMMUNITY AND STAKEHOLDERS. INDIVIDUAL SPEAKERS ARE ALLOWED FIVE MINUTES ON AGENDA OR NON-AGENDA ITEMS. BOARD MEMBERS MAY ASK QUESTIONS FOR CLARIFICATION ON COMMENTS MADE. IF APPROPRIATE, WILL BRING IT BACK TO THE SUPERINTENDENT AND HER DESIGNEE. >> WE HAVE SIX PUBLIC COMMENTS BUT IS -- GENERAL. AND TWO FOR THE ACTION -- >> WE WILL START WITH LINDA -- >> GOOD EVENING, BOARD. I WANT TO SAY, I AM EXCITED TO HEAR WE [00:30:07] ARE GETTING A FLASHING LIGHT AT OLEANDER AT ONE OF OUR DATES. THE WHEN I COMPLAINED ABOUT LAST YEAR. THAT STRAIGHT-BACKED THERE IS VERY UNSAFE. I SIT THERE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND I WATCHED STUDENT TRY TO GET -- EXIT GATE NUMBER TWO, AND VEHICLE. AND IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. THERE IS A HOUSE THERE , MAYBE CAN WORK WITH THE CITY TO REMOVE THE BUSHES. YOU CANNOT SEE A VEHICLE FROM HAWTHORNE TO THAT DATE -- GATES . FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR KIDS, I WATCHED TWO KIDS TRY TO CROSS THE STREET MONDAY. THIS IS AT 6:00 AT NIGHT WHEN THEY'RE LEAVING THE GAMES. THEY ALMOST GOT HIT. THAT IS JUST UNSAFE. WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE IT SAFER IN ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS. BECAUSE THINGS HAPPEN AND PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY THE CONSEQUENCES . AS YOU CAN SEE, IT IS NOT FIND. IT IS JUST -- UNAVOIDABLE. ALL I'VE GOT TO SAY IS, I AM LUCKY IT WAS ME IN MY VAN AND NOT A STUDENT. THAT WOULD BE DEVASTATING TO SEE A STUDENT HIT. PLEASE WATCH OLEANDER AND MAKE SURE OUR STUDENTS ARE SAFE. MY DAUGHTER SPOKE AT CITY COUNCIL BEFORE. WE GOT APPROVED TO HAVE IT OUTBACK NOW. PLEASE, ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS. MAKE THEM SAFE. THAT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO A STUDENT. I HAVE TO SAY, YOUR WATER POLO TEAM WAS AWESOME. THEY CAME TO MY RESCUE TO HELP ME. AND THE SCHOOL POLICE. THANK YOU. >> NEXT, WE HAVE RUDY CASTRO. >> GOOD EVENING, SCHOOL BOARD. AND NEW MEMBER, STAFF AND COMMUNITY. I FOUND THE MOST RECENT RESULTS FOR THE 2022 AND 2023 SCHOOL YEAR. THEY ARE KIND OF APPALLING. TRADITIONALLY, BACK WHEN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM WAS A ROLL STANDARD, OUR GRADES WERE 60% AND BELOW FOR PHIL. TO GET A C, YOU HAD TO GET 70%. A WAS 90% 200%. OUR NATIONAL SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS FALLEN TO GLOBAL MEDIOCRITY. CALIFORNIA IS IN THE LOWER HALF OF THE NATION. SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY IS IN THE LOWER HALF FOR CALIFORNIA. NO SURPRISE, FONTANA IS NEAR THE REAR . I OBTAINED THESE FIGURES FROM THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DASHBOARD, WHICH WAS NOT EASY TO GET THE METRICS, AND THE CALIFORNIA ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE . AND THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. STATEWIDE, ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS IS 47% , MEET OR EXCEED'S, MATH IS ONLY 35%. THAT IS CALIFORNIA IN GENERAL. FOR SANTANA -- FONTANA, IT'S ONLY 31% FOR ELA, 30% FOR MATH. CHINO -- HAD SCORES OF 60% AND 47% FOR MATH. -- ALSO SURPASSED THE STATE AND FONTANA WITH SCORES OF 62% FOR ENGLISH, 43% FOR MATH. CALIFORNIA, THE GRADE FOR SCIENCE IS REALLY ALARMING. IT IS 30% MET OR EXCEEDED THE STANDARD FOR THE STATE. FONTANA IS AT 17%. THAT IS SOMETHING WE REALLY HAVE GOT TO WORK ON. CHINO VALLEY, BETTER, 37%. IS INTERESTING SCHOOL DISTRICTS , WHICH RESPECT PARENTAL RIGHTS, HAVE STUDENTS THAT SCORED HIGHER THAN THE STATE AVERAGE IS. AS OF JULY, 2024, THE AVERAGE SALARY IN FONTANA, CALIFORNIA IS $44,270 PER YEAR. THE MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME IS $93,000 . THAT SEEMS HIGH, BUT IT'S ONLY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TWO OR THREE NUMB WORKERS IN EACH HOUSEHOLD. FONTANA IS LOWER, MIDDLE CLASS CITY. WITH A POPULATION THAT IS 70% HISPANIC. CALIFORNIA RANKED THE THIRD MOST EXPENSIVE STATE IN THE COUNTRY FOR A SINGLE ADULT TO LIVE IN COMFORTABLY. THAT SALARY WOULD HAVE TO BE HUNDRED $13,652. -- RECENTLY, IT'S COME TO OUR ATTENTION THAT THE [00:35:02] ENTIRE FONTANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HAVE RECEIVED RAISES. EVEN A 10 STEP INCREASE. SALARIES RANGE FROM HUNDRED $25,000 TO $350,000 . THAT IS INCREDIBLE FOR ALL OF OUR MIDDLE-CLASS COMMUNITY. IT BOGGLES THE MIND THAT THIS IS TYPICAL OF OUR ELITES IN GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACY WHO LOOK DOWN ON THE PUBLIC . HOW IN THE WORLD CAN THE BOARD JUSTIFY THEIR RAISES AT THIS TIME WITH INFLATION , HIGH HOUSING COSTS AND INSURANCE, AND HIGH INTEREST RATES . I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT. CONSIDERING MOST SCHOOL BOARDS NATIONWIDE , REALLY SHOULD HAVE NEARLY 100% TURNOVER. AND -- SHOULD BE TORTURED EVERY LEVEL OF GOVERNMENT. ON A PERSONAL NOTE, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK DR. CASADA FOR BRINGING HER PARENTS . HER ACHIEVEMENTS ARE NO DOUBT DUE TO HER PARENTS GUIDANCE AND CARE, AS WELL AS HER OWN HARD WORK AND EFFORTS. THEY HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE PROUD OF HER. IN THAT VEIN, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU A SIMPLE QUESTION. PUT YOURSELF IN THE SHOES OF PARENTS. WHO HAVE TO FACE THE SPECTER OF LOCAL OFFICIALS TAKING AWAY THEIR CHILDREN BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING HOSTILE TO THEM. TODAY'S SCHOOLS ARE INSISTING ON PUTTING HARMFUL, CONFUSING IDEAS AND CHILDREN'S MINDS ABOUT THEIR SEXUAL IDENTITIES. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR PARENTS WOULD HAVE FELT IF YOU WERE SENT TO SCHOOL ONE MORNING AND NEVER RETURNED. BECAUSE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS THOUGHT YOUR PARENTS WERE A DANGER TO YOU, WITH THEIR DEEP CATHOLIC FAITH, OR OTHER FAITH THAT OPPOSES HOMOSEXUALITY AND VIEWS THE BODY AS A TEMPLE, NOT TO BE TAMPERED WITH. I CAN GUESS HOW THEY WOULD'VE FELT, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN DEVASTATED. PLEASE THINK ABOUT THIS. IT IS PERSONAL TO THE MANY FAMILIES TO WHOM THIS IS HAPPENED. THANK YOU. >> BOARD PRESIDENT. >> CAN WE PUT IN THE FAQS A CLARIFICATION ON -- THAT WERE NOT GIVEN TO THE BOARD. AS WELL AS THE WAY THE -- WORKED ? >> JUST THE GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THIS ABOARD AND ACTED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE? >> YES, THANK YOU. >> I WANTED TO MAKE IT CLEAR, THE BOARD DOES NOT MAKE ANYWHERE NEAR SIX FIGURES. >> A GOOD CLARIFICATION. >> NEXT IS -- >> GOOD EVENING TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, BODY AND COMMUNITY . AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ADRIANA . MY NAME IS -- THIS MONTH, -- I WILL LAY OFF A LITTLE BIT ON THE PARENTAL NOTIFICATION THAT THIS DISTRICT IS SO RELUCTANT TO BRING FORTH FOR DISCUSSION. AND TO HEAR FROM THE COMMUNITY. -- TO KEEP SECRETS FROM PARENTS ABOUT A MINOR CHILD EXPERIENCING GENDER -- IN SCHOOL. I WANT TO ADDRESS ANOTHER SUBJECT THAT THIS BOARD IS RUBBER-STAMPING AND PUSHING THROUGH -- WITH NO REAL OPEN DISCUSSION. THAT WOULD BE ON THE SUPERINTENDENT'S RACE. ASSOCIATE SUPERINTENDENT RAISES AS WELL. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SUPERINTENDED? I THINK JUST ABOUT TWO YEARS. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR THE REASON YOU THINK THIS RAISE IS NEEDED AT THIS TIME, AND TO BE RETROACTIVE. YOU SEE HOW IT WORKS IN THE CORPORATE WORLD. AN EMPLOYEE GETS PAID FOR THE WORK YOU ARE HIRED TO DO. AND YOU GET A RAISE AFTER PERFORMING ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT YOU WERE HIRED TO DO. WHEN THE COMPANY IS DOING WELL AND IT'S WITHIN THE MEANS OF THE EMPLOYER, THE EMPLOYER WILL RESORT -- REWARD THE EMPLOYEE WITH A RAISE OR PROMOTION. SUPERINTENDENT INBODY, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK [00:40:01] THE RAISE IS NEEDED FOR YOU AND YOUR ASSOCIATES AT THIS TIME WHEN THE STATE IS IN A MAJOR BUDGET DEFICIT AND CUTS ARE COMING . -- WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU ARE DESERVING OF THIS RAISE. -- HAS PRESENTED SOME BAD NUMBERS FOR HOW STUDENTS ARE DOING, AND HOW THE OVERALL DISTRICT IS DOING. -- A JUSTIFICATION FOR A RAISE FOR DOING WHAT YOU WERE HIRED TO DO. IT JUMPED TO THREE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS . IN 2018, FOUR IN THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE. IT'S A LOT OF WORK, I GUESS, AND IF NECESSARY. I JUST DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE JUSTIFICATION IN A BIG JUMP IN SALARY. -- I'M WAITING FOR THE 2023 NUMBERS . THAT IS A BIG JUMP. I AM NOT AGAINST RAISES WHEN THEY ARE MERIT-BASED AND ARE TRULY EARNED. BUT WHEN IT SIMPLY BASED ON YOUR COMPLETED YEARS , AND FOR DOING THE JOB YOU WERE HIRED TO DO, I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT. YOU WOULD THINK STUDENTS ARE EXCELLING HERE, THEY ARE NOT. IT GOES TO SHOW HOW THE DISTRICT IS -- MISMANAGING TAXPAYERS MONEY AT THE EXPENSE OF THE STUDENTS AND OUR SCHOOL. -- WILL BE THE -- DO NOTHING TO HELP STUDENTS ACADEMICALLY. IT WILL ALL GO TO THE POCKETS OF THE SUPERINTENDENTS , ADMINISTRATIVE MEMBERS AND DEPARTMENTS BEING CREATED AND ADDED TO THE PAYROLL. THIS ABOARD ELECTED BY THE RESIDENTS OF FONTANA DO NOT QUESTION ANYTHING , THEY ALLOW THIS STUFF TO HAPPEN. I WANT THE PUBLIC TO BE AWARE OF THE SALARIES -- THESE ASSOCIATE UP -- AT THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE. THE OLDEST ONE I'M SEEING HERE BACK IN 2019. STARTED MAKING $95,000. IN 2022, THIS SIMPLY MADE $318,000. I DO NOT SEE THIS EMPLOYEE ANYMORE. THE SECOND HIGH SALARY IN THIS ADMINISTRATION MADE $292,000 . THIS EMPLOYER IS NOT HERE . THANK YOU. >> NEXT, WE HAVE DR. SHELLEY BRADFORD . >> GOOD EVENING, BOARD. PRESIDENT SERNA. I THINK IT IS GREAT THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED OVER THE SUMMER. CONGRATULATIONS, IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS GREAT. I AM COMING TONIGHT BECAUSE OF SOME CONCERNS . I WAS AT THE LAST SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. I GAVE SOME CONCERNS ABOUT WHO WAS PUT OVER THE NCSS DEPARTMENT. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME CONCERNS THAT HAVE HAPPENED OVER THE YEARS. WE HAVE RENAMED -- I ALREADY KNOW, THERE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS -- WE KNOW MY BACKGROUND IS RESTORATIVE PRACTICES AND LOOKING INTO THOSE THINGS. PLEASE UNDERSTAND, I AM DOING RESEARCH ON FONTANA UNIFIED AND YOUR HIRING PRACTICES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. BECAUSE I AM CONCERNED. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE GOING THE SAME ROUTE THAT RIALTO HAS JUST GOTTEN IN TROUBLE FOR. YOU GUYS GOT RID OF -- I DID NOT LIKE HOW THAT TURNED OUT. WE FINALLY GET AT SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL, WE KNOW THAT THE LARGEST POPULATION OF BLACK STUDENTS FOR HIGH SCHOOL. WE KNEW WE NEEDED A BLACK ADMINISTRATOR. JUST BECAUSE OF POPULATION, REPRESENTATION. WITH THEM YOU GET A BLACK PRINCIPAL AND YOU SENT TWO RACIST VICE PRINCIPALS. ONE WHO [00:45:06] SCREAMED, SHOUTED, MADE IT KNOWN TO COMMUNITY AND EVERYONE ELSE HE DID NOT WANT TO GO THERE, BUT YOU STILL PUSHED HIM THERE. YOU HAVE THE OTHER ONE COMING FROM KAISER WITH ALL TYPES OF -- AND YET, THE ONLY DEPARTMENT THAT BLACK FAMILIES REALLY HAVE THAT THEY CAN GO THROUGH, BECAUSE OF THE DATA WE HAVE OUR SECOND LANGUAGE -- TO GO THROUGH. WE HAVE A DEPARTMENT THAT SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS WHO TO GO TO . THERE ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS PEOPLE CAN GO TO. I USED TO BELIEVE IN THE FACT THAT I COULD GO TO -- I TRY TO TALK TO -- GRANTED, PRESIDENT SERNA, HE TEASED ME ABOUT WEARING MY T-SHIRT BECAUSE I CAME FROM WORK. I WAS WEARING A SAN BERNARDINO SHORT. I CAME AND HELPED OUT LAST WEEK AT THE BACKPACK GIVEAWAY. YET, YOUR DIRECTOR DID NOT COME OUT THERE AND BOTHER TO HELP THE FAMILIES. I HAD PARENTS COMING TO ME WITH CONCERNS, ASKING FOR MY PHONE NUMBER. BECAUSE WE DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU GUYS LEFT US WITH ANYTHING. THE PERSON YOU GUYS ASCENT UP THERE -- I AM NOT SURE HOW THE HIRING PROCESS IS GOING HERE. BECAUSE YOU HIRE SOMEBODY. WE NEED HELP. WE DIDN'T NEED PEOPLE UP THERE TO HELP BALANCE, SO OUR STUDENTS CAN SEE A REPRESENTATION OF THERE. YET, I DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS IS WORKING OUT. ARE THEY REALLY GETTING REPRESENTATION? OR DID YOU SET THEM UP BY SENDING TWO RACIST PEOPLE TO SUPPORT HIM UP THERE? YOU GUYS KNOW THIS. YOU GUYS KNOW THE WRITE UPS. THERE IS A HISTORY BEHIND BOTH OF THEM. AND YOU SENT THEM THERE, SCREAMING AND HOLLERING BECAUSE THEY DID NOT WANT TO GO. YOU PUT SOMEONE OVER AT MTSS . I DON'T KNOW WHY SHE WAS NOT OUT THERE AT THE GIVEAWAY. I ASKED MR. BAKER, HE CANNOT TELL ME. I WAS OUT THERE, PRESIDENT SERNA WAS OUT THERE. MARY WAS OUT THERE. YOU GUYS MAKE THESE STEPS FORWARD AND GET BACK. YOU KNOW THE PERSON YOU SENT UP THERE, HE HAD A PROBLEM WHEN IT CAME TO -- WE KNOW HE HAD A PROBLEM WHEN IT CAME TO -- AND YET YOU SENT HIM UP THERE TO SUPPORT ANOTHER BLACK MAN ? WERE YOU GUYS TRYING TO SET HIM UP? THAT IS HOW IT LOOKS TO SOME OF US. WE ARE NOT SURE, BUT WE WANT TO LET YOU KNOW WE ARE WATCHING. IF THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE DOING, LIKE THE LAST BOARD MEETING, THE PERSON THAT WAS HERE GOT MAD BECAUSE YOU HIRED THREE BLACK WOMEN IN EQUITY POSITIONS. HOW UNFAIR WAS THAT. LOOK AT THE OVERALL NUMBERS. OVERALL, HOW IS THE HIRING PROCESS IN THIS DISTRICT? WHO IS BEING HIRED? HOW ARE THEY BEING HIRED? WHAT POSITIONS ARE THEY BEING PUT IN? AND HOW ARE WE TREATING THEM ? IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO MY DAUGHTER UP THERE AT SUMMIT, I AM CONCERNED. WHO AM I GOING TO GO TO? WHO CAN I TRUST? RIGHT NOW, I DON'T THINK I HAVE ANYBODY I CAN TRUST. I THINK I CAN GO TO PRESIDENT SERNA . I AM SCARED. I WANT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT. I FEEL LIKE YOU GUYS ARE SETTING UP OUR BLACK COMMUNITY. LAKE, YOU GIVE US SOMETHING, LIKE THOSE FIELD TRIPS . BUT YOUR ETCHING STUFF BACK. STOP HIRING PEOPLE YOU THINK ARE YES PEOPLE. WE HAVE ENOUGH CLARENCE THOMAS US. CAN WE HAVE PEOPLE THAT FIGHT FOR EVERYBODY? -- >> GOOD EVENING . SPECIAL WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST ADDITION TO THE SCHOOL BY. OF COURSE, THE AUDIENCE AND THE MANY PEOPLE WATCHING. I'M HERE TO SAY I AM EXCITED FOR THE NEW YEAR. FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW ME, I AM -- FOR THE FONTANA TEACHERS ASSOCIATION. I HAVE TO SAY, THE TEACHERS ARE EXCITED TO BE BACK HERE. I WANT TO MAKE SURE I DO NOT FORGET TO MENTION OUR OTHER EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS. [00:50:04] THE SCHOOLS DO NOT RUN. WE HAVE A LOT OF WORK AHEAD OF US. WE'VE MADE SOME PROGRESS BUT THE ROAD AHEAD IS THE LONG. WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM, ALL OF THE STAKEHOLDERS, AND ESPECIALLY MEANS THE PARENTS AND FAMILIES OUT THERE. THE BEST ADVOCATE YOUR CHILD CAN HAVE IS YOU. PLEASE STAY INVOLVED. PLEASE REACH OUT TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE AT YOUR SCHOOL. IF NECESSARY, REACH OUT TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CABINET. I KNOW MANY OF THEM PERSONALLY AND I KNOW THEY ARE DEDICATED. I LOOK FORWARD TO A VERY PRODUCTIVE YEAR AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO MAKING FORWARD TO MAKE THIS A BETTER DISTRICT FOR STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME THIS EVENING. >> LAST, WE HAVE DON. >> GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT SERNA. BOARD MEMBERS. EVERYONE HERE. I AM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STONE WORKERS LOCAL REPRESENTING THE CLASSIFIED STAFF ADRIANA . OUR STUDENT BOARD MEMBER'S CEASE TO AMAZE ME. YOU HAVE WONDERFUL THINGS TO SAY AND I CANNOT WAIT TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE COME OUR WAY THIS SCHOOL YEAR. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE CLASSIFIED STAFF MEMBERS WHO HAVE MADE THE START OF THE 2025 SCHOOL YEAR A GREAT SUCCESS FOR OUR STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND THE COMMUNITY. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME CHALLENGES, LIKE ALWAYS. HOWEVER, WE GET THE JOB DONE. AFTER ALL, YOU CANNOT SPELL -- WITHOUT USW. UNFORTUNATELY, OUR FAMILY HAS SUFFERED OUR FIFTH LOSS OF LIFE THIS YEAR. I WOULD LIKE TO ECHO WHAT SUPERINTENDENT -- CONDOLENCES TO DIANA GUTIERREZ, WHO WAS A 23 YEAR MEMBER OF THE STILL WORKERS LOCAL -- WORKING AT -- AS THE INTERMEDIATE CLERK . SHE HAS A LOT OF FAMILY. AND I AM HOPEFUL FOR THE REST OF THE 2024 AND 2025 SCHOOL YEAR THAT IT WILL BRING SOME HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS. NOW GOING TO 3.9, SUPERINTENDENT COMMENTS . >> THANK YOU. I APPRECIATE THIS OPPORTUNITY. WE DEFINITELY HAVE SOME NEWS TO SHARE. THE POWERPOINT COMES UP. IN PREPARATION FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR, THE MANAGEMENT TEAM CAME TOGETHER ON JULY 18TH AND 19TH , THAT IS THE FIRST SLIDE. FUSD FOCUSED ON MAKING CONNECTION. CONNECTIONS TO OUR PURPOSE, CONNECTIONS TO OUR STUDENTS, CONNECTIONS TO OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY. WE ARE EXTREMELY FORTUNATE TO HAVE PRESIDENT SERNA JOIN US THAT DAY. AND SPOKE BEFORE THE KEYNOTE. THE KEYNOTE WAS TITLED, BUILDING TRUST THROUGH CONNECTION, EMPOWERING LEADERS TO UNITE AND EMPOWER. HE SHARED INSIGHT ON HOW BUILDING TRUST REALLY IS THE BEGINNING OF A RELATIONSHIP [00:55:01] AND BUILDING STRONG CONNECTIONS. HE ALSO PROVIDED PRACTICAL STRATEGIES TO HELP US BETTER CONNECT, SUPPORT AND EMPOWER ONE ANOTHER TO ENSURE EVERYONE FEELS VALUED, INSPIRED AND CONTRIBUTES TO OUR COLLECTIVE GROWTH. THE DISTRICT HERE, YOU WILL SEE, WE CELEBRATED OUR COMMITMENT TO CONSERVATION -- WITH A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY. HELD WITH THE MONT -- TO MARK THE COMPLETION OF A COMPLAINT THAT SO COMPLETED WATER PROJECT. SIX SCHOOLS CONNECTED THEIR EXISTING LANDSCAPE IRRIGATION WATER SUPPLY TO RECYCLE WATER. -- DRASTICALLY REDUCING WATER CONSUMPTION. THIS MOVE IT IS ONE OF FOUR EQUAL -- INCLUDING ELECTRIC BUSES, SOLAR PANELS AND ORGANIC WASTE RECYCLING . THE CONVERSION OF THE SIX SCHOOLS IRRIGATION SYSTEMS IS ESTIMATED TO SAVE ENOUGH DRINKING WATER TO SUPPLY MORE THAN 200 FONTANA RESIDENCES WITH WATER FOR ONE YEAR. WHICH AMOUNTS TO ABOUT 190,000 IN SAVINGS EACH YEAR. THE PROJECT WAS GRANT FUNDED FOR ABOUT $360,000 . YOU HURT A LITTLE BIT ABOUT -- IF YOU HAD A CHANCE TO LEARN ABOUT IT. IT WAS A REALLY HARD DAY. WE GAVE AWAY ALMOST 1000 BACKPACKS, BUT FOOD AS WELL TO OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAD A DRONE THE CAME OUT AND TOOK PHOTOS. I WILL SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT MICHAEL GARCIA SHARED ABOUT THIS BACK-TO-SCHOOL RESOURCE AFFAIR. >> I WANT TO THANK OUR PARTNERS -- AND FONTANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR SUPPORTING THIS GREAT EVENT. THIS KICKS OFF OUR SCHOOL YEAR. WE ARE SERVING OVER 500 FAMILIES WITH BACKPACKS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, GROCERIES AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES AS WELL. THIS EVENT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT SUPERINTENDENT INBODY, PRESIDENT SERNA AND THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IS ALWAYS SUCH A SPECIAL DAY. MONDAY'S MILESTONE -- IS A PERFECT REMINDER OF FONTANA UNIFIED'S RICH HISTORY AND EXCITING GROWTH ON THE HORIZON. IN CLOSING, I WANT TO SHARE A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION TEAM IN THE FUTURE SHAPERS PROGRAM FOR BEING NAMED ONE OF 73 SEMI FINALISTS IN THE CAREER IS THE CHALLENGE. THEY WILL RECEIVE AN EQUAL SHARE OF THE $1.5 MILLION PRIZE BOWL. TO CELEBRATE THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. THE DEVICE -- IT REPRESENTED SCHOOLS FROM 37 STATES. AND FONTANA UNIFIED IS ONE OF TWO CALIFORNIA DISTRICTS. THIS AUGUST, 10 FINALISTS WILL BE SELECTED TO MOVE ON. BUT I FEEL LIKE WE HAVE ALREADY WON. SINCE MANY STUDENTS SECURED PAID INTERNSHIPS WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS, AND SOME HAVE BEEN OFFERED ONGOING EMPLOYMENT. CONGRATULATIONS TO THAT AS WELL. THAT CONCLUDES MY PRESENTATION. >> THANK YOU. WE ARE NOW AT 3.10. IT WAS PULLED AT THE [4. Consent Calendar Section] BEGINNING OF THE ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA. WE ARE NOW MOVING INTO CONSENT CALENDAR ITEM 4.1. THIS IS TO APPROVE THE CONSENT CALENDAR ON ITEM 4.2 THROUGH 4.22 . 4.3 WAS PULLED AT THE ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA. -- THERE IS AN AMENDMENT TO 4.16 , ON PAGE 10. THE NAME SHOULD READ JARED CLAY . WE DID MAKE SURE THAT WAS AMENDED . I WILL MAKE SURE THE PUBLIC KNOWS WE [01:00:01] APPROVE THE CONSENT CALENDAR. I THINK THAT IS IT FOR CONSENT CALENDAR. MOTION PASSES, 5-0. UNDER DISCUSSION , ITEM 5.1, BUSINESS SERVICES -- MS. INBODY HAS INFORMED ME WE HAVE A PUBLIC SPEAKER FOR THAT ITEM. >> WE HAVE A -- THAT WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK ON 5.1. >> FOR THIS ONE, I JUST HAVE A QUESTION . PROVIDED THAT THE BOARD THOUGHT THIS WAS NECESSARY . WHAT WERE THE SUCCESS RESULTS TO THIS PROGRAM? I AM SIMPLY ASKING BECAUSE THIS IS COSTING ALMOST ABOUT $4 MILLION. A LOT OF STUDENTS HAVE COME IN THE PAST -- THIS JUST SEEMS LIKE A LOT. >> MISS INBODY, CAN THE TEAM GIVE A BACKGROUND OF WHAT THIS CONTRACT DOES FOR OUR SCHOLARS? >> SURE, THANK YOU. WE WILL INCLUDE FUNDING SOURCES AS WELL. WE WILL START OFF WITH MR. BAKER. THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO THIS CONTRACT. WE WILL LET MR. BAKER SHARE ABOUT THE FIRST PART. ONE OF THE THINGS WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO IMPLEMENT IS A STRUCTURED PLAY. DURING THAT TIME, IT GIVES KIDS A CHANCE TO CONNECT AT RECESS TIME. AND DURING LUNCHTIME, THE MIDDLE TEAM -- SCHOOL LAST YEAR, WE REDUCED ABSENTEEISM, SO THAT WAS AN INTERESTING FACTOR, TO GIVE KIDS A CHANCE TO GO OUT AND INTERACT. AS FAR AS THE CURRICULUM. WE CAN WORK WITH -- TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE IT POSTED . IT GAVE THE KIDS A CHANCE TO GO OUT THERE -- >> THANK YOU. ALLISON? >> THANK YOU. THE SECOND HALF OF THE PROGRAM IS OUR TEACHER RELEASE PROGRAM. WE USE THAT TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND HAVE PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY TIME WITH ALL OF OUR TEACHERS. WE DO HAVE DATA AROUND THAT AS WELL. LAST YEAR WE FOCUSED ON KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS, FOCUSING ON DEVELOPMENT OF THE INFORMED PRACTICES. -- OUR RATINGS HIGHLY AS RELATED -- ELEVATED. THE REASON WE HAD A RELEASE PROGRAM, IS THE ISSUE WITH GETTING SUBSTITUTES TO PULL TEACHERS OUT OF THE CLASSROOM FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HAVE BEEN CHALLENGING, ESPECIALLY SINCE COVID. THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT, WE JUST DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH SUBSTITUTES. SO THIS HAS BEEN AN ALTERNATIVE TO THAT. AND IT HAS BEEN VALUABLE FOR THE TEACHERS. >> THANK YOU. >> ALL RIGHT. >> SORRY, I NEED TO ASK. I NEED TO TRY TO LOG BACK IN. FOR SOME REASON [01:05:01] THE CASE, I DON'T KNOW OF ANY OTHER BOARD MEMBER HAS IT OR NOT . INFORMATION THAT DETAILS WITH THE PROGRAM I AM NOT ABLE TO LOG IN. >> I CAN SHARE MY LAPTOP. >> ADMINISTRATIVE CONTENT. NORMALLY WE GET THAT ON OUR AGENDA. >> THERE IS EXECUTIVE CONTENT IN THE ATTACHMENT. IT IS THERE. >> WHAT I USUALLY LOOK FOR IS SOMETHING THAT IS TYPED OUT. AND IT GIVES US THE INFORMATION -- IN THE GREEN. WE DON'T HAVE THAT. I HAVE ASKED FOR IT BEFORE. AND NOW THIS PARTICULAR ONE DOES NOT. >> IF IT'S OKAY WITH YOU, TAKE WHAT WE PUT IN THE BOARD REPORT AND MAKE SURE HE GETS INTO THE EXECUTIVE CONTENT . >> NORMALLY, I SEE BOTH. I COULD SEE THIS IS A CONTRACT, HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT GIVE ME THE INFORMATION OF WHAT WE ARE DOING WITH THAT PARTICULAR ITEM. THAT IS WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR. >> MS. SANDOVAL IS CORRECT, THERE SOMETIMES -- ADDED AS BACKGROUND FURTHER FOR US AS A BOARD. I THINK THAT IS WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT? >> WE TRY TO DO THAT AT BOTH ENDS. -- >> I KNOW THERE WAS INFORMATION IN FRIDAY'S BOARD REPORT. WE WERE ABLE TO ACCESS. I WOULD PROBABLY SAY TO THE TEAM, IF WE COULD DO BOTH ? DOES THAT HELP? >> BOARD PRESIDENT, IN THE BOARD REPORT, ALL OF THE INFORMATION WAS -- OUR AGENDA, THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION IS IN THE REPORT. >> IT IS ALL ELECTRONIC. IT WOULD BE A COPY AND PASTE. THE LANGUAGE THAT IS THERE COULD BE PASTED. >> BUT WHEN YOU ARE GOING OVER THE AGENDA, YES, YOU HAVE IT IN THE BOARD REPORT. BUT WE DON'T HAVE IT IN ONE PLACE WHERE YOU CAN READ IT. EITHER YOU MAKE THE NO ON TOP. IT'S A LOT EASIER FOR ME. THAT IS WHAT I AM ASKING. >> IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE. I THINK THE TEAM CAN DO THAT FOR US. WE ARE ON 5.1. THE ITEM IS TO AWARD RFP -- AND APPROVE AND AGREE WITH COAST-TO-COAST COACHING INCORPORATED INAUDIBLE ] I NEED A MOTION TO APPROVE. AND THEN WE CAN ADD A DISCUSSION IF WE NEED TO. MOTION TO APPROVE? IS THERE MOTION AND SECOND TO APPROVE ITEM 5.2? >> SECOND, WITH A QUESTION. >> I WILL DO SANDOVAL WITH A SECOND. >> EVERY TIME I SEE THESE AGREEMENTS, I WONDER THE BUSINESS SERVICES -- FOR COST VERSUS PURCHASING. I KNOW A LOT OF THESE COME WITH -- THAT'S [01:10:06] WHY I'M CURIOUS TO KNOW. HAVE WE COMPARED PRICES ? >> I APPRECIATE THE QUESTION. THAT'S THE RESEARCH WE ARE DOING NOW. WE ARE TRANSITIONING OUR COPIERS AND PRINTERS AND SUCH. WE WILL PROVIDED IN A BOARD REPORT . IT ALIGNS PERFECTLY WITH WHAT WE ARE DOING IN THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM . >> ANY OTHER FURTHER DISCUSSIONS OR QUESTIONS? HEARING ON, I HAVE A MOTION BY MR. PEREZ, A SECOND BY MRS. SANDOVAL. BUT IT HAD A BUYOUT CLAUSE FOR ALL OF THE PRINTERS THEY PROVIDED. AND WE DID NOT FEEL THAT IT MIGHT NOT BE IN OUR BEST INTEREST. BECAUSE IT IS A LARGE FLEET OF OVER 1200 PRINTERS , PRINTERS AND CLASSROOMS AND OFFICES IN DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS , WE WENT WITH A SHORTER LEASE OF TWO YEARS , TO GET THROUGH PART OF THIS CONTRACT -- INCLUDES BUYING OUT ALL OF THOSE. BECAUSE THE PREVIOUS CONTRACT DID HAVE A BUYOUT. THANKS OUR TECHNOLOGY TEAM, WE LOWERED THE PRICE CONSIDERABLY I $200,000. IS THAT THERE INCREASE? I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT. I ASKED A COUPLE OF MEETINGS AGO ABOUT LONGEVITY. I BELIEVE MANY YEARS AGO IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE WAY YOU GOT RAISES, YOU GOT RAISES ALL THE WAY UP TO 18 . 17. YOU INCREASED AS YOU MOVED UP. WHEN YOU GOT TO 18, YOU NO LONGER GOT AN INCREASE. THAT IS WHEN LONGEVITY STEPPED IN. THE PROBLEM I HAVE WITH LONGEVITY, EVERY YEAR YOU GET A RAISE -- LONGEVITY IS NOT A BENEFIT. THAT IS WHAT I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE START LOOKING AT IT WHERE IT DOES NOT INCREASE 3% WHEN THEY GET A RAISE -- HOWEVER, LONGEVITY SHOULD NOT GO UP THERE. >> PRESIDENT SERNA, IF I MAY ? >> LONGEVITY SCHEDULE WAS ALREADY APPROVED. IT IS NOT FOR VOTE. >> I KNOW THAT. I WANT TO MAKE SURE IT PROBABLY SAID WE NEED TO LOOK AT THAT. AND WE NEED TO RENEGOTIATE SOMETHING LIKE THAT. NOT THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT IS DONE. ITEM [01:25:06] 5.12, TEACHING AND LEARNING. THIS IS BOARD POLICY 6146.1, HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS. SECOND READING AND ADOPTION -- WE HAVE A PUBLIC COMMENT ON THIS ITEM. >> THANK YOU. I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE UP MORGAN CHRISTIE. >> I WANT TO SAY GOOD EVENING AND HAPPY NEW SCHOOL YEAR, SUPERINTENDENT INBODY, PRESIDENT SERNA, AND BOARD MEMBERS. WELCOME, ADRIANA. I WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK REGARDING THE PROPOSED NEW GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS FOR FONTANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT -- -- IN STRONG SUPPORT OF THIS REQUIREMENT BEING ESTABLISHED AT ITS OWN -- AND NOT SHOEHORNED INTO AN ALREADY -- DISTRICT. FOR TWO LONG, IN MANY PLACES, CURRICULUM, REGARDLESS OF OUR GOOD INTENTIONS HAVE FOCUSED ON PEOPLE LIKE ME AT THE PROTAGONIST IN STORIES. -- FOCUSING NEARLY EXCLUSIVELY ON GODS AND MYTHOLOGY, DESPITE ALL CULTURES HAVING THEIR RICH STORIES TO DRAW FROM. TO THE ENSHRINING OF SHAKESPEARE AT THE -- ART HAS BEEN EUROCENTRIC. IT'S TIME TO ENSHRINE THE STORIES THAT ARE NOT WHITE. TO ALLOW OUR STUDENTS LIVING IN A MICROBURSTS WORLD THAN EVER SEEING THEMSELVES IN THE NARRATIVE OF THEIR ANCESTORS CULTURES, LEGACIES. JUST AS I GOT TO DO IT EVERY SINGLE CLASS I TOOK . ETHNIC STUDIES FOR OUR STUDENTS FOR THE DIVERSE WORLD AROUND THEM AND -- EMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING AMONG THEM. OUR LANGUAGE ARTS AND HISTORY TEACHERS DO A TREMENDOUS JOB -- THAT EXCELLED YEAR AFTER YEAR. AS WE ALL KNOW, THERE SIMPLY IS NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE SCHOOL YEAR ALREADY. IN MY OWN HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, I TOOK AN ADVANCED LEVEL HISTORY CLASS IN MY JUNIOR YEAR THAT FOR WE REACHED THE FIRST PART OF WORLD WAR II, BUT IT WAS THE LAST -- BEFORE THE TEST. MY TEACHER DID HER BEST. SHE HAD FELT -- AND PRAM 60 YEARS OF HISTORY IN THE SINGLE CLASS PERIOD. HISTORY IS NOT GETTING ANY SHORTER. IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S HAPPENING BY VOLUME EVERY YEAR. WOULD IT COMES DOWN TO, IS THAT WE NEED TO HONOR THE INTENT OF THE ETHNIC NATIONAL REQUIRED, THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE YEAR TO DO IT JUSTICE IN AN EXISTING CLASS -- ADDITIONALLY, OUR JOB, OUR INTENT, BY ALL OF US BEING IN THIS ROOM, BEING STAKEHOLDERS IN THIS DISTRICT IS THERE OUR STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE. WE WANT THEM TO BE READY FOR THEIR NEXT STEP. OR DREAM THEY PURSUE. FOR FOR SOME STUDENTS, WHATEVER WE PUT IN PLACE HERE WILL BE THE ONLY ETHNIC STUDIES CLASS THEY TAKE. FOR OTHERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE ON TRACK TO OUR GREAT CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITIES, THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO ENGAGE IN DEPTH WITH THE -- COMMUNITY FOLLOWING HIGH SCHOOL. -- REQUIRED THREE UNITS OF ETHNIC STUDIES TO GRADUATE. WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN FONTANA -- WHY SHOULD WE SHY AWAY FROM ADEQUATELY PREPARING OUR STUDENTS BY WEDGING ETHNIC STUDIES INTO CLASSES ALREADY INAUDIBLE ] WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RISE TO MAKE THIS MOMENT AND DO THIS GREAT -- THANK YOU, AS ALWAYS FOR YOUR TIME AND PATIENCE AND LISTENING. >> COLLIES, THIS IS ITEM 512. TO ADOPT BOARD POLICY 6146.1. IS THERE A MOTION AND SECOND? >> I WOULD LIKE TO MOTION TO DISCUSS. >> SECOND . >> DR. QUEZADA MOTION TO DISCUSS, A SECOND BY MR. JOE ARMENDAREZ . >> AS WE KNOW, VICE PRESIDENT PEREZ BROUGHT UP -- FINANCIAL LITERACY REQUIREMENT. THE DISTRICT MENTIONED AT THAT MEETING THAT WE NEED TO GET THE BALL ROLLING . I KNOW WE WILL HAVE TO BRING THE POLICY BACK ANYWAYS. ALSO, I WANT TO THANK -- FOR COMING OUT AND SPEAKING. I WAS IN A BE A LITTLE MORE [01:30:05] RESERVED IN MY COMMENTS. I WAS GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU SAID. I DO BELIEVE WHAT SHE HAS SAID. WE HAVE THIS MOMENT UPON US. WHILE I UNDERSTAND THE COMMITTEE HAS RELUCTANTLY BROUGHT -- I HAVE TALKED WITH MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE. THEY ACTUALLY WANTED TO STAND ALONE IN A COURSE. I PERSONALLY FEEL LIKE WE HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY AS A BOARD TO COLLECTIVELY DECIDE IF WE WANTED TO BE A STANDALONE COURSE OR EMBEDDED. WE HAVE THAT CHOICE. I BROUGHT THE FINANCIAL LITERACY REQUIREMENT. THAT COULD BE A SEMESTER OR YEAR LONG. IF THAT IS A SEMESTER, AND ETHNIC STUDIES IS A SEMESTER, IT COULD BE A YEAR-LONG OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS. I THINK NOW, WE HAVE A LOT MORE TO DISCUSS, A LOT MORE QUESTIONS. AND I DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE VOTING ON THIS POLICY OR ADOPTING RIGHT NOW. I WAS TOLD -- I ASKED WHAT THE PROGRAM WOULD LOOK LIKE. I WILL BE HONEST, I GOT REALLY LACKLUSTER RESPONSES. I WAS TOLD I COULD NOT GET THAT INFORMATION UNTIL THE COMMITTEE MEETS. SO I'M SUPPOSED TO STEP AND VOTE ON THIS POLICY WHEN I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS. MARS, I KNOW YOU ARE VERY WELL VERSED IN THIS. AT THIS TIME, WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY. FOR US TO SAY, OKAY, WE WILL EMBEDDED -- AS A FORMER ENGLISH TEACHER, ENGLISH IS SLAMMED. ABSOLUTELY, WE CAN BRING IN INVOICES OF NONDOMINANT AUTHORS. BUT TO DO THIS WORK OF JUSTICE, AND MY COLLEAGUES KNOW, I WAS A -- FOR A CREDENTIALED TEACHER -- TO DO THIS WORK CORRECTLY AND PURPOSELY , WE CANNOT JUST EMBED IT IN EVERY SINGLE CLASS. IN OUR CLASS. I GET THE MENTALITY. AND I KNOW THIS WORK IS DOING DONE FOR -- WE ARE NOT CLOSE. I WOULD REALLY HOPE THE BOARD ALREADY BEHIND. THAT IS WHERE I STAND. >> MAY I ? I AGREE WITH DR. QUEZADA . I HAVE REACHED OUT TO QUITE A FEW PEOPLE OUT THERE. HOWEVER, I BELIEVE IF WE ARE GOING TO DO SOMETHING, WE NEED TO DO IT RIGHT. AND I AGREE WITH YOU, JENNIFER. I KNOW WE STARTED THIS PROCESS. I WANT TO SAY I WAS PROBABLY ON THE BOARD ONE YEAR. IN 2015, 2016, THE TOPIC OF THE CONVERSATION CAME FORWARD. WE HAVE BEEN WAITING THIS LONG. AND WE KNOW THE DISTRICT HAS SOME -- BUT I'M NOT HAPPY WITH THAT. I TRULY BELIEVE AS A COUNTRY, WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT EVERY ETHNIC GROUP , WHAT ARE THEIR CULTURES LIKE? WHAT ARE THEIR FOODS LIKE? CLOTHING? WHY DO THEY CELEBRATE THIS? HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE? I BELIEVE I HAVE LEARNED A LOT OF HISTORY OVER THE YEARS. WHAT MORGAN SAID TONIGHT IS CORRECT. WE'VE LEARNED THE AMERICAN HISTORY -- LET LEARNED THE AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY. LET'S LEARN, AND LEARN TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. WE NEED TO LEARN TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. THAT IS WHAT WE ARE MISSING IN THIS COUNTRY. WE HAD A LOT OF -- THINGS BEING SAID ABOUT ONE ANOTHER. I WISH IT WOULD NOT BE LIKE THAT. OUR KIDS HAVE TO LEARN TO GET ALONG. I AM DONE WORKING. MY WORK IS HERE WITH KIDS. SO I BELIEVE IT IS TIME FOR US TO DO IT RIGHT. THANK YOU. >> DID YOU HAVE A COMMENT, JOE ARMENDAREZ? >> I WANT TO RESPECT MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS. IF THIS TRULY IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING -- HOW IMPACTFUL IT BE TO TABLE THIS? >> I APPRECIATE THE QUESTION. A LOT OF THE QUESTIONS COMING OUR WAY, -- I DO NOT RECALL THE EMBEDDED BEING THE ONLY OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS. BUT DR. -- CAN EXPLAIN THAT. SO WE ARE ALL ON THE SAME PAGE. AND WHAT THE NEXT STEPS WOULD BE. >> HELLO. THIS POLICY ALLOWS US TO PUT THIS AS A GRADUATION [01:35:03] REQUIREMENT FOR FONTANA UNIFIED, WHICH ALLOWS THE COMMUNITY TO BEGIN WORKING ON THE FORCES. THE PRESENTATION I HAD DONE IN JUNE -- OUR FIRST COURSE IS THE -- ETHNIC STUDIES COURSE. WE HAVE SCHOOLS THAT DO NOT HAVE ANY ETHNIC STUDIES COURSES BEING OFFERED CURRENTLY. AND WE HAVE TO DEVELOP THE COURSE. THAT THE FIRST PIECE WILL DO. THE PLAN IS FOR THE STANDALONE TO BEGIN -- IT WILL COME NEXT SPRING TO BE APPROVED AS A STANDALONE COURSE BEING OFFERED IN AUGUST , 2025. THAT IS THE STANDALONE COURSE. IN 2026, WE WILL BEGIN DEVELOPING AND LOOKING INTO EMBEDDED COURSES. THE IDEA THAT IN A BEST CASE SCENARIO THOSE WOULD NOT BE ADDED UNTIL 2029. BUT THE FIRST PRIORITY IS THE STANDALONE COURSE. THE EMBEDDED COURSES AN ADDITIONAL OPTION FOR STUDENTS, DOWN THE LINE WHEN THE REQUIREMENT KICKS AND FOR OUR CLASS OF 2030. EVEN DEVELOPING IT -- WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE CLASS OF 2030, 2032 THAT WOULD BE LOOKING AT AN EMBEDDED CLASS, IF THAT IS A WAY WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO PURSUE ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES. WHAT THE STANDALONE COURSE IS THE PRIORITY. I AM WORKING WITH THE GLOBAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT. WE HAVE HAD SOME SHIFTS. WE ARE PREPARING TO BEGIN THE COMMITTEE WORK IN SEPTEMBER. AND THE CALL FOR TEACHERS TO BEGIN DEVELOPING THE STANDALONE COURSE. WITH THAT, THAT'S OUR FIRST PRIORITY. THE SECOND PIECE IS, WE WILL BRING BACK THE FINANCIAL LITERACY COMPONENT. THAT WILL BE ANOTHER PART ONCE WE GET THAT AS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT , THAT WILL ALSO BE PART OF THE GLOBAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT. THEY WILL BE WORKING ON BOTH CLASSES. WE ARE TRYING TO GET THIS ONE STARTED AND MOVING INTO THE PERSONAL-FINANCE CLASS THAT IS REQUIRED. AND THEN THE AR. JUST LIKE WHERE IT LISTS LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH, IT DOES NOT TALK ABOUT CURRICULUM AND BOARD POLICY. CURRICULUM FOCUS, THE WAY ALL OF THOSE THINGS ARE MET, THAT IS ALL IN OUR AR. WE ARE LOOKING AT BEING ABLE TO BEGIN BRINGING AR INFORMATION FORWARD TO THE BOARD. AND THEN IN THE AR -- THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT MOVING PARTS HAPPENING SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE BOARD ADOPTING THIS AS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT KICKS US INTO THE NEXT STEP. WE CANNOT MOVE INTO DEVELOPING THE COURSE UNTIL WE KNOW THIS IS GOING TO BE A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT, THAT FONTANA IS GOING TO REQUIRE . >> HAS BEEN APPROVED YET , WITH THE COURSE HOW IT IS WRITTEN IN OF THE STATE? >> THE MODEL CURRICULUM? -- THERE IS ONE THAT IS AVAILABLE AS PART OF THE FRAMEWORK. THOSE HAVE BEEN APPROVED AT THE STATE LEVEL . THOSE WILL GUIDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COURSE WE ARE GOING TO DO FIRST. OUR STANDALONE CURSES -- COURSES WE FORMALLY HAD DO NOT COMPLY. AND THEY NEED TO BE REVISED. SO STANDALONE COURSE IS OUR FIRST PRIORITY. WHEN I SPOKE TO ASSEMBLYWOMAN REYES ' DEPARTMENT , THEY TOLD ME TO MAKE SURE WE HAD THAT IN PLACE. AND THEN GET TO WORK. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE. >> ANY CLARITY? YOU BRING UP THE WORK OF THE COMMITTEE. FROM MY UNDERSTANDING, THERE HAS BEEN WORK OF A COMMITTEE, EXTENSIVE WORK. I DO NOT WANT TO DEVALUE THAT WORK. >> SOME OF THIS I AM DOING WITHOUT MY NOTES. THERE WAS A COMMITTEE THAT WAS BROUGHT FORTH TO LOOK AT THE FRAMEWORK AND THE MODEL CURRICULUM. THAT WAS DONE PRIOR TO ME JOINING FONTANA UNIFIED . THEY WERE DOING THOSE THINGS AND BEGINNING TO DEVELOP COURSE PIECES BEFORE THE DISTRICT HAD GONE THROUGH THE PROCESS OF RESEARCH. AND BRING IT TO THE BOARD FOR DIRECTION OF WHAT AVENUE TO GO DOWN. THAT WAS PART OF THE -- AND THE TASK FORCE DID THIS SPRING. THAT WAS PART OF THE JUNE PRESENTATION. [01:40:05] MANY OF THE MEMBERS THAT WERE ON THE STEERING COMMITTEE AND TASK FORCE WERE A PART OF THE WORK FROM 2023, I BELIEVE. AND THEN THEY ALSO ARE A PART OF WHO WE ARE GOING TO BE EXTENDING THINGS OUT FOR COURSE DEVELOPMENT. WHAT HAPPENED WAS, THE PROCESS OF HOW A COURSE COMES TO BE WAS NOT BEING FOLLOWED. WE HAD TO BACK UP AND SIX STEPS TO MAKE SURE WE WERE DOING IT CORRECTLY. WE ARE TRYING TO GET BACK ON THAT PATH. AND THE WORK THAT COMMITTEE HAS DONE, THEY WENT THROUGH AND LOOKED AT WHAT WAS IMPORTANT IN TERMS OF THE WORK AND MODEL CURRICULUM THAT SHOULD BE EMBEDDED. BUT THEY DID NOT CREATE THE COURSE YET. THEY CREATED A GUIDED DOCUMENT AND THEN BRINGING IN FONTANA'S HISTORY . WE WILL DEFINITELY BE USING THOSE DOCUMENTS IN THE COURSE OF DEVELOPMENT. BUT THEY DID NOT GET ALL THE WAY THROUGH AND FOLLOW THE PROCESS , SO WE HAD TO DO CLEANUP. >> I APPRECIATE THAT TRANSPARENCY. ALSO, I AM SURE YOU'VE ALREADY SEEN THIS. IN THE ACTUAL BOARD POLICY, IS SAYS WITH EACH COURSE BEING ONE YEAR, UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED. I WANT TO MAKE SURE I UNDERSTAND THIS CORRECTLY, THE STANDALONE ETHNICS STUDIES COURSE WOULD BE A YEAR-LONG, CORRECT >> RIGHT. >> THE DECISION AS THAT COURSE GETS DEVELOPED WEATHER STANDALONE WILL BE A YEAR OR SEMESTER NEEDS TO BE FINALIZED. AND THEN PART OF THAT LANGUAGE IS IF DOWN THE ROAD SOMEONE TAKES A YEAR-LONG EMBEDDED CLASS, THEY WOULD SATISFY THAT REQUIREMENT IN A YEAR. >> THAT ALONG, WE NEED REVISION ON, THAT IS NOT CLEAR. WE NEED TO FIX THAT. THANK YOU. >> WITH THE TEACHERS THAT WERE ON THE COMMITTEE FOR THIS COURSE, HOW MUCH INPUT DO THEY ACTUALLY HAVE REGARDING THE COURSE ITSELF? >> THE COURSE HAS NOT BEEN DEVELOPED YET. THE TEACHERS THAT WERE A PART OF THE ORIGINAL COMMITTEE , IT WAS ALL TEACHERS AND TWO ADMINISTRATORS THAT WERE DEVELOPING THE GUIDE THAT TOOK THE FRAMEWORK AND MODEL CURRICULUM. AND THEN, IN THE WORK OF THE STEERING COMMITTEE AND TASK FORCE, I DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT NUMBERS, I BELIEVE THERE WERE TWO ADMINISTRATORS , THEY WERE THERE AS VOLUNTEERS TO GIVE INPUT. MYSELF, DR. ROGERS AND -- WERE THERE. WE WERE THERE DOING THE WORK AND HELPING ANSWER QUESTIONS, NOT ACTUALLY MAKING A DECISION IN THOSE PIECES. THERE WERE THREE COUNSELORS AND THE REST OF THE NEW MEMBERS WERE TEACHERS. I WANT TO SAY THEY WERE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 15, OR 22 TEACHERS THAT WERE A PART OF THAT. WITH PROBABLY 18 OR 19 THAT CAME TO EVERY MEETING. SOME OF THEM WERE SUBSTITUTES AND DIFFERENT THINGS. BUT THEY WERE GOING THROUGH AND LOOKING AND GIVING FEEDBACK OF THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS. AND AS WE BROUGHT THROUGH , HERE WERE THE PROS AND CONS OF A STANDALONE, EMBEDDED , AND A BLENDED MODEL. WHERE YOU HAVE MULTIPLE PATHWAYS TO OUR STUDENTS BEING ABLE TO MEET THE REQUIREMENT. >> WHEN WE START TO DEVELOP AGAIN, CAN WE MAKE SURE STUDENTS HAVE AN INPUT OF WHAT IS GOING TO BE TAUGHT? >> YES. THAT IS THE NEXT STEP. THE NEXT COMMITTEE IS ONLY TEACHERS DEVELOPING CURRICULA. ADMINISTERS, MYSELF AND -- WILL BE THERE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS. AND MAKE SURE WE GET TO THE FINISH LINE. BUT TEACHERS WILL BE DOING ALL OF THE WORK IN TERMS OF GIVING INPUT . WE WILL PULL RESOURCES FOR THEM. OR IF THERE'S ADDITIONAL RESOURCES THEY NEED, WE WILL SUPPORT THAT. IT WILL BE 100 DEVELOPED -- 100% DEVELOPED BY TEACHERS. >> THANK YOU. I WILL START WITH, AT THE LAST MEETING FROM [01:45:01] JUNE 19TH, I DID SEND AN EMAIL TO DR. MCKENNEY , DR. BOURGEOIS , HIGHLIGHTING SPECIFIC AREAS OF FOCUS. I DID SHARE THAT WITH DR. QUEZADA. AND I WOULD LIKE TO ASMUSSEN BODY TISSUE THAT IN THE BOARD REPORT. HOW WE ENGAGE AND SUPPORT TO ENSURE WE TAKE LOCAL HISTORY AND COMMUNITY INPUT IN THE CURRICULUM IN SOME WAYS. INTEGRATING LOCAL HISTORY. HAVING THE ABILITY , BY OUR TEACHERS IN THE SEAT TEACHING THE WORK IS HOW DO THEY ADDRESS POTENTIAL CONTROVERSY . I THINK THAT IS IMPORTANT. I REMEMBER FONTANA WAS A FOCUS OF THAT NOT TOO LONG AGO. I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT TEACHERS ARE EQUIPPED TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO ADDRESS THOSE CONTROVERSIES IN A WAY THAT IS CAPACITY BUILDING, NOT ONLY FOR TEACHERS, BUT STUDENTS THEY ARE TEACHING. THAT THERE IS A -- IN THE WORK. THAT IS NOT JUST FLY-BY-NIGHT , ONE SEMESTER THING. I DO BELIEVE THERE NEEDS TO BE INTEGRATION AND OTHER SUBJECT MATTER AREAS. BUT WE ALSO NEED TO HAVE THE STANDALONE COURSES. THE REASON I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE SOME INTEGRATION IS, IT GIVES AN OPPORTUNITY -- EARLIER, THERE WAS A FOCUS AROUND THE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, KENYA, JAPAN. THE FOCUS WAS ON MASS -- MATH. YET UNDERSTOOD THE DIFFERENCE AND DIVERSITY. AND ETHNIC STUDIES, THAT WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO GO HOME. I AM LEARNING MORE. ABOUT THE DIVERSITY OF MATH. WHETHER IT'S LANGUAGE, OR HISTORY IN ITSELF. I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO INTEGRATE, BUT ALSO HAVE THE STANDALONE. I DO NOT BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE JUST A SEMESTER. I BELIEVE WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE IT A YEAR-LONG. BECAUSE OF THAT SEMESTER GOES BY SO QUICK THAT EVEN GRASPING THE UNDERSTANDING OF A CLASS IS TOUGH. I REMEMBER TAKING A CLASS IN COLLEGE -- A SEMESTER BEING 18 WEEKS IS STILL PRETTY FAST. AND THEN ACCESSIBILITY ISSUES. I KNOW WILL BE A REQUIREMENT. JUST MAKING SURE IT'S OFFERED MULTIPLE TIMES SO STUDENTS CAN ACCESS IT. AND WE ARE NOT LIKE CAL STATE WHEN THE STUDENT CANNOT GET IN THE CLASS. I AM JUST HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE AREAS OF WHAT I SENT TO THE DEAN TO HAVE THEM THINK ABOUT THAT PERSPECTIVE AS THEY ARE PLANNING THE WORK. WITH THAT BEING SAID, I DO NOT KNOW HOW WE WANT TO MOVE. I KNOW IT IS A DISCUSSION ITEM RIGHT NOW. DO WE WANT TO TABLE THIS FOR AN OPPORTUNITY FOR MAYBE DR. QUEZADA AND OTHERS WHO WANT TO HELP GIVE INPUT TO THE TEAM ON THE POLICY TO REVISE IT FOR OUR LOCAL CONTEXT. >> CAN I SAY A QUICK COMMENT? FIRST, REGARDING WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, MY CONCERN IS THE FINANCIAL LITERACY BEING A SEMESTER. IF MAKE THAT A YEAR, THEN WE ARE CURTAILING THE OPTIONS THAT IT WILL TAKE TO VISIT AND FINISH THE CT PATHWAY. TO YOUR POINT IN A MATH CLASS -- I WANT TO MAKE CLEAR TO THE PUBLIC, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ETHNIC STUDIES AND CULTURALLY SUSTAINING TEACHING. WE SHOULD HAVE CULTURALLY SUSTAINING TEACHING IN EVERY CLASSROOM AN OPPORTUNITY. I WANT TO MAKE THAT CLEAR. IT'S NOT LIKE THAT -- THAT'S WHY I AM PASSIONATE. >> I DID APPRECIATE THAT CLARITY. >> IF A COLLEAGUE WOULD LIKE TO PARTNER , I UNDERSTAND WE ARE VERY BEHIND. I WOULD LIKE TO TABLE THIS. AND WORK COLLABORATIVELY ON THIS. THIS WORK IS IMPORTANT AND WILL OUTLAST ALL OF US. >> I WILL SECOND. >> I DID, MOTION TO TABLE. >> WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT LOCAL HISTORY, THERE ARE TWO DISTRICTS. [01:50:01] >> I WILL GO BACK TO , MICKEY, I BELIEVE YOU WERE STILL WORKING AT COUNTY OFFICE. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE A PART OF AN ETHNIC STUDIES SYMPOSIUM WE DID. WE TO -- TOOK A TOURETTE IN VARIOUS DISTRICTS. AS YOU SAY, THERE ARE TWO HISTORIES. THERE'S A LOT OF CONTEXT WHEN IT COMES TO OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHO LIVED BELOW THE BASELINE. WE HAD A MEMORIAL WE JUST DID AT RANDALL -- THERE WAS SOME HISTORY LEARNING, UNDERSTANDINGS, A LOT OF ANGER BUT UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WAS GOING ON AT THAT TIME. WHERE AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE NOT ABLE TO GO ABOVE BASELINE. EVEN LATINOS. I THINK OVER TIME, FONTANA HAS CHANGED TREMENDOUSLY. BUT THAT HISTORY SHOULD BE EMBEDDED IN OUR WORK. THAT IS WHAT I MEAN BY THE CONTEXT. THE GREAT THINGS THAT HAPPEN FROM THE INDUSTRIAL PORTIONS OF FONTANA. THE KAISER STEEL WAS HERE. THINGS HAVE CHANGED. I AM JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE. I GET THAT. THAT NEEDS TO BE EMBEDDED IN SOME WAYS. THAT IS ALL I'VE GOT TO SAY. WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE TABLE BY DR. QUEZADA AND A SECOND BITE VICE PRESIDENT PEREZ . ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? I WILL CALL FOR THE VOTE. THE TABLING OF THIS POLICY PASSES, 5-0. ITEM 5.13, TEACHING AND LEARNING. THIS IS THE AB MILLER FOOTBALL BOOSTER CLUB. TO SUPPORT A.B. MODEL FOOTBALL FOR THE 2024 AND 2025 YEAR. >> MOTION. >> SECOND. >> ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING ON, I WILL CALL FOR THE VOTE. MOTION PASSES, 5-0. ITEM 5.14. BOARD MEMBER REQUEST. BOARD BYLAW 9323. MEETING CONDUCT, SECOND READING AND ADOPTION. I WILL TURN THIS OVER TO JOE ARMENDAREZ. >> I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO TABLE THIS POLICY. I'VE SEEN SOME OPPORTUNITIES TO GET CLARIFICATION. >> ARE YOU MAKING A MOTION TO TABLE? IS THERE A SECOND? THANK YOU, MR. PEREZ. I HAVE A MOTION ON THE TABLE BY JOE ARMENDAREZ TO TABLE THIS ITEM. ANY DISCUSSION? HEARING ON, PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE. MOTION PASSES, FIVE MINUS THERE. LADIES AND [6. Comments] GENTLEMEN, WE ARE AT 6.1. I WILL START WITH MR. JOE ARMENDAREZ. >> I WANT TO SAY, GOOD EVENING EVERYONE WHO STUCK AROUND. GREAT TO BE BACK. WELCOMING ALL OF OUR STUDENTS BACK TO OUR FRESH SCHOOL YEAR. PUBLIC SAFETY IS NUMBER ONE, WE SHOULD BE CONTINUING TO FOCUS ON THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS AND WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH OUR CITY TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS. I DO WANT TO ECHO THE CONGRATULATIONS AND ALL OF THE GREAT WORK THAT OUR DISTRICT IS DOING. CHIEF, I APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU'RE DOING MOVING FORWARD WITH OUR GROUP. I AM CITED TO SEE THE TYPE OF EFFORTS WE WILL MAKE TO MAKE SURE OUR STUDENT SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT THIS YEAR. SECONDLY, I WANT TO CONGRATULATE ADRIANA AND WELCOME HER TO OUR BOARD. AS WELL AS LET YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE AMAZING PARENTS AND FAMILY TO SUPPORT YOU. I CAN TELL YOU ARE A TIGHT FAMILY. IT IS GOOD TO SEE YOU GUYS ENCOURAGED HER TO MOVE FORWARD AND CHASE HER DREAMS. SHE IS GOING TO BE A GREAT ADDITION TO THIS TEAM. THANK YOU FOR GIVING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH HER. NEXT, I WANT TO CONGRATULATE OUR MISS TEEN FONTANA, VALERIE FROM SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL . SHE [01:55:04] IS NOT HERE TODAY. I WANT TO CONGRATULATE HER. I BELIEVE THE MISS FONTANA TEEN PADGETT IS SO INSTRUMENTAL IN TEACHING OUR YOUNG WOMEN , THE FUNDAMENTALS OF RESUMES, SO MANY THINGS THESE YOUNG STUDENTS LEARN. IT SUCH AN IMPACTFUL PROGRAM. I AM HONORED TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT THAT PROGRAM. NEXT, I JUST REALLY WANT TO THANK ALL THE HARD WORK OF SUPERINTENDENT INBODY AND ALL THE CABINET HAS MADE IN THE OFF-SEASON -- LOOKING AT DASHBOARDS AND EVERYTHING UP, IS HARD TO TELL AT TIMES. WITH THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS FOR COVID. I WANT TO THANK YOU GUYS FOR THE WORK YOU DO. AND WHETHER PEOPLE SEE IT OR NOT. THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL YOU DO. TO BE A PART OF THE VOTE -- TO BRING YOUR SALARIES TO EVEN CLOSE TO WHERE THEY SHOULD BE. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT SEE THAT , THEY SEE JUST NUMBERS. THE FACT THAT OUR CABINET HAS WORKED DILIGENTLY AND HARD WITH BEING IN THE 60TH AND 70TH PERCENTILE FOR SO LONG. AND NOW THAT WE ARE BRINGING YOU GUYS CLOSER TO MARKET, JUST THANK YOU GUYS FOR ALL OF THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION YOU PROVIDE TO OUR STUDENTS. WITHOUT YOU GUYS ARE MAKING THESE CHANGES SO WE CAN STEER THE SHIP WHERE WE NEEDED TO GET IT, YOUR WORK IS INSTRUMENTAL AND IMPACTFUL. THANK YOU ALL FOR WHAT YOU DO. TO OUR UNION PARTNERS, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO. USW, FDA. WORKING HAND-IN-HAND WITH THE DISTRICT AND OUR EXECUTIVE CABINET TO MAKE SURE WE ARE FOCUSED ON OUR STUDENTS. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH. IT IS GREAT TO BE BACK. I KNOW I WAS SICK OUR LAST MEETING. AND WITH ONE MEETING A MONTH, MISSING IT HURTS. JUST SO YOU KNOW, I APPRECIATE ALL OF THE HARD WORK THAT WENT INTO THE SUMMER BREAK. I AM EXCITED TO SEE THE OUTCOME FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR. THANK YOU GUYS VERY MUCH. EVERYBODY HAVE A BLESSED DAY. >> THANK YOU , JOE ARMENDAREZ. >> I THINK IT IS INCREDIBLE, ALL OF THE STAFF THAT CAME TOGETHER . FAMILIES AND STUDENTS INVOLVED. I WAS LIKE, I WANT TO ATTEND AS A STUDENT. I THOUGHT THAT WAS FABULOUS. ALSO, I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. EVERY TIME WE HAVE A NEW ACADEMIC YEAR, THERE IS JUST EXCITEMENT. I AM REALLY EXCITED FOR THE NEW OPPORTUNITIES. ALSO, ADRIANA, IT'S SUCH AN HONOR TO SIT ALONGSIDE YOU ON THIS BOARD. AND AND YOUR FAMILY. I THINK IT SPEAKS VOLUMES THAT ALL OF YOU ARE HERE SUPPORTING HER. I AM GRATEFUL THAT YOU ARE HERE TO REPRESENT THE STUDENT PERSPECTIVE. ANYTHING YOU NEED, REACH OUT TO US. YOU ARE OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. AND OUR STUDENTS. PLEASE, LET US KNOW. NO QUESTION OR COMMENT IS TOO SMALL. YOUR VOICE IS AMPLIFIED TO REPRESENT ALL OF THOSE STUDENTS. WELCOME. I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS. I AM CURIOUS, DO WE HAVE A MARIACHI BAND? OR AN OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO PARTAKE? I HAVE BEEN SPEAKING WITH OTHER DISTRICTS AND THEY HAVE ONE. I AM LIKE, DO WE HAVE THAT HERE? THEY COULD PRESENT AT EVENTS. I'M CURIOUS. ALSO, AN UPDATE ON VAPE SENSORS THAT I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR FOR A WHILE NOW. HOPEFULLY THERE'S AN OPPORTUNITY. I THINK THAT COULD BE REALLY HELPFUL TO THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS. I BELIEVE WE ARE PILOTING, BUT WE HAVE BEEN PILOTING FOR A WHILE. MY TERM IS ALMOST DONE, THAT IS SOMETHING I COMMITTED TO MOVING FORWARD. >> THANK YOU, DR. QUEZADA. MS. SANDOVAL. >> WELCOME, ADRIANA. MAKE SURE WE WANT TO VOTE FOR SOMETHING, [02:00:01] USE YOUR CLICKER. IT IS SO NICE TO SEE YOUR PARENTS HERE. I EXPECT YOU WILL BE HER EVERY SINGLE MEETING, RIGHT? NO, NOT REALLY. WE DO HAVE A LOT OF FUN. WE WORK HARD. SOMETIMES WE GET PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT WE ARE VOTING ON. IT IS ALL ABOUT KIDS. EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US, WE LOVE KIDS. AND I LOVE TO SEE ALL CHILDREN GO TO COLLEGE. I KNOW THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE. THERE IS A VOCATIONAL EDUCATION, THAT IS GOOD TOO. I WORKED 17 YEARS IN VOCATIONAL EDUCATION. I KNOW IT WORKS AS WELL. ENOUGH ON THAT PITCH. WE ARE VERY BUSY DURING THE SUMMER. WE ATTENDED EVENTS JUST AUGUST 1ST. WE WERE HERE IN THE BACKPACK GIVEAWAY. IT WAS SO HOT OUT THERE. I FELT SO BAD FOR THE PARENTS THAT WERE STANDING IN LINE. THEY ACTUALLY WRAPPED AROUND THE BUILDING. ALL THE WAY TO THE ENROLLMENT CENTER. AND THEY STOOD HERE. I AM LIKE, OH MY GOD, THEY'RE NOT GOING AWAY. HOPEFULLY WE HAVE ENOUGH BACKPACKS AND FOODS. THOSE THAT DID NOT GET A BACKPACK, PLEASE CONTACT THE PRINCIPAL AND LET HIM KNOW YOU NEED A BACKPACK. AND THEY GAVE SOME REALLY COOL ONES YESTERDAY AT NATIONAL NIGHT OUT. THEY WERE GIVING ALL KINDS OF GOODIES. NEXT TIME THEY HAVE ONE OF THOSE, MAKE SURE TO SHOW UP. THE BLUE BUCKETS WERE THERE. THERE WERE ONCE FOR THE WASTE THAT YOU CAN PUT ON YOUR CALENDAR AND THROW IT IN THE TRASH. ALWAYS RECYCLE, THAT'S ME, I AM A RECYCLE GIRL. THAT WAS ABOUT IT. I LOVE THIS BOARD MEETING. I AM GLAD TO BE BACK. I WAS SO SICK. ALL OF YOU GUYS DID NOT WANT ME AROUND. I AM GLAD TO BE BACK. I AM GLAD IT IS A NEW SCHOOL YEAR. AMAZING PARENTS. THEY ARE ACTUALLY BEING NICE TO ONE ANOTHER. THEY ARE NOT TRYING TO RUN YOU OVER. THAT IS REALLY NICE. THE KIDS ARE GOING TO POPLAR . I LIKE THEIR PICKUP AND DROP OFF. THE SAME THING WITH CYPRESS. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME. CHIEF -- PLEASE TELL YOUR OFFICERS, THANK YOU FOR BEING OUT THERE. WATCH OUT FOR AMANDA. SHE WILL GIVE YOU A TICKET IF YOU'RE PARKED IN THE RED ZONE. NOBODY STOP IN THE RED ZONE. AMANDA IS OUT THERE. SHE LIKES TO PRACTICE HER HANDWRITING. I AM HAPPY YOU GUYS ARE ALL BACK. I AM SUPER HAPPY. TAKE CARE OF YOUR KIDS, DRIVE SLOW IN THE SCHOOL ZONE. THERE IS NO SPEEDING THROUGH THERE. WE DO NOT WANT ANYBODY HURT. HAVE A WONDERFUL NIGHT, DRIVE SAFE. IT WAS NICE MEETING YOU ALL. PLEASE COME BACK. ANY QUESTIONS, AND SEND US AN EMAIL. WE ARE HERE TO SERVE YOU, NOT USURP US. HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY. >> THANK YOU, VICE PRESIDENT PEREZ? >> THANK YOU. FOR SOMEONE TO CONGRATULATE ADRIANA. WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING YOUR VOICE. YOU GAVE AN AMAZING INTERVIEW. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING THE VOICE YOU WILL BRING TO THIS BOARD. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE HER FAMILY . IT IS GREAT TO SEE A FAMILY CONNECTION AS YOU HAVE. WITH THAT BEING SAID, MS. INBODY, CAN WE CONTACT ROTC? AND SEE IF THEY ARE WILLING TO HELP THE VFW AND FONTANA WITH VOLUNTEERING FOR GRASS CUTTING. IF THEY ARE WEARING A UNIFORM, HOPEFULLY THEY WILL BE MOVED TO VOLUNTEER AT THE SAME LOCATION. I KNOW I BROUGHT IT UP A WHILE AGO AND THEY HAVE DONE AMAZING WORK. I WANT TO MAKE SURE WE CAN CONNECT WITH THE HAIRCUT UNIVERSITY. AND SEE IF THEY ARE STILL GOING TO COME DOWN AND GIVE STUDENTS WHO ARE UNABLE TO AFFORD HAIRCUT AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET A HAIRCUT . I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH THE CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND MEDICINE. THEY OFFERED ME A CAMPUS TOUR. I AM EXTENDING THE INVITATION TO MS. INBODY AND ANY STAFF SHE RECOMMENDS. THEY HEARD ABOUT THE VARIOUS CAREER PATHWAYS WE HAVE. ESPECIALLY FOCUSING ON THE MEDICAL ASPECT. THEY ARE REALLY EXCITED AND WANT TO PARTNER WITH US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WE HAVE A COUPLE OF DATES , WHICH I WANT TO EMAIL TO MS. INBODY. TO SEE WHAT GATE -- TO GO ONTO PUBLIC SAFETY , IF WE CAN START POSTING THE FLASHING LIGHTS FOR SCHOOL BUSES. THE POST WAS GOING AROUND ONCE A WEEK, IF WE CAN [02:05:01] CONTINUE THAT. I'M THINKING IT HAS BEEN DONE AND STILL SOME PARENTS ARE NOT GETTING THE PICTURE OF HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO STOP AT THE BUS. SO WE CAN STOP AT THE CITY AND SEE IF THEY WOULD BE WILLING TO ENTERTAIN TURNING TO THOSE AREAS , BECAUSE IT'S CONSISTENT WHERE THE BUS DROPS OFF STUDENTS. MAYBE WE CAN TURN THAT INTO A CORRIDOR . EVEN PAINTING THE GROUND YELLOW AND PUTTING SIGNS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE STREET TO NOTIFY PARENTS THAT STUDENTS WILL BE CROSSING THE STREET, AND TO SLOW DOWN. I ALSO WANT TO THANK MICKEY. BECAUSE OF THE AMPLE AMOUNT OF POLITIC POST -- POSITIVE POSTS HAVE BEEN OVERWHELMING. WE HAD A CHANCE TO SEE MR. GARCIA. I ENJOYED SEEING THE POSITIVITY OF THE POST IN ALL OF THE GREAT THINGS WE ARE DOING. LASTLY, I DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE DID GET THE POLL. THERE WAS A POLL THAT WENT OUT AND IT HAD NOT ONLY NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT FONTANA, BUT FALSE INFORMATION ABOUT FIRING TEACHERS AND REALLY INCORRECT AND INACCURATE THINGS. SINCE THE POLITICAL SEASON IS UPON US, WE ARE REACHING OUT TO LEGAL. IF SOMEONE IS HOSTING SOMETHING NEGATIVE AND FALSE, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND WE DO PUT UP THE RIGHT INFORMATION. BECAUSE IT IS POLITICAL, I KNOW IT IS A VERY SIMILAR AND WE HAVE TO TREAD CAREFULLY. I WANT TO MAKE SURE THROUGHOUT THIS, FONTANA UNIFIED DID NOT GET ANY BLACK EYES, THAT WE ONLY HAVE A POSITIVE AND CORRECT INFORMATION OUT THERE. WITH THAT BEING SAID, THANK YOU EVERYBODY FOR STAYING THIS LATE. BY THE WAY, FOR ADRIANA'S PARENTS, THIS IS LIKE THE SHORTEST MEETING WE INVITE YOU BACK AGAIN. THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION -- WE HOPE TO GET ALL OF THAT INFORMATION OUT AS BEST AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU, STAFF. >> THANK YOU, VICE PRESIDENT PEREZ. I AM GOING TO ECHO THE THINK USE -- THANK YOU'S TO OUR TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS. I HAVE WATCHED THEM THROUGHOUT THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS SETTING UP THE SPACES AND ROOMS. JUST THE SMILES OF TEACHERS COMING BACK TO GREET KIDS. IT HAS BEEN AMAZING TO WATCH THAT. OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF WHO HAVE PREPARED OUR SITES, GETTING THEM READY FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, WHETHER IT'S CLEANING, GETTING READY TO DO WORK IN NUTRITION. WHETHER IT IS OUR AIDS MAKING SURE KIDS ARE SAFE DURING SCHOOL TIME. HE EVEN OUR CITY PARTNERS WHO HAVE CROSSING GUARDS CROSSING KIDS ACROSS THE STREET. MAKING SAFE ENVIRONMENTS. IT HAS BEEN AMAZING TO WATCH EVERYONE COME TOGETHER TO MAKE SURE THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL HAS BEEN A SUCCESS. SCHOOL POLICE OFFICERS WHO PATROL THE AREAS TO MAKE SURE THERE ARE SAFE ROUTES FOR THE KIDS. WE HAVE OUR CHALLENGES. IT IS NOT LIKE WE ARE PERFECT. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEE PARENTS DROPPING KIDS OFF IN PLACES THEY PROBABLY SHOULD NOT. I KNOW YOU ALL ARE MAKING SURE PARENTS ARE EDUCATED TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. SO THE KIDS ARE SAFE. I JUST WANTED TO THANK EVERYBODY INVOLVED IN DOING THAT. MICHAEL, IT WAS NICE STANDING NEXT TO YOU AT THE BACKPACK -- IT WAS HOT. AND THE PARTNERSHIPS. JUST TO WATCH THE COMMUNITY OF FONTANA COME TOGETHER BECAUSE OF YOUR LEADERSHIP AND YOUR TEAM'S LEADERSHIP FOR THE FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TEAM , IT WAS AMAZING. THANK YOU FOR THAT. TO THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM, VICE PRESIDENT PEREZ AND JUST TALKED ABOUT THE POSITIVE STUFF, TO WATCH ABC 7 COME INTO OUR COMMUNITY, TO SEE CBS, FOX 11 NEWS, THAT IS DIFFERENT. I THINK THE REPORTERS THAT SO I THANK THE REPORTER THAT CAME. IT IS NICE TO BE ABLE TO SEE THAT -- WITH ALMOST 5.5 MILLION PEOPLE IS GETTING THE COVERAGE IT DESERVES. AND PARTICULARLY THE POSITIVE STUFF. IN PARTICULAR HERE AND FONTANA. PETER, CLARISSA, DAVID, ALEJANDRA, WHO WERE ALL OVER THE PLACE WITH THEIR EQUIPMENT. MAKING SURE THEY CAPTURED FOOTAGE, IT WAS GREAT TO SEE. I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THAT. ADRIANA, WELCOME TO THE GOVERNANCE TEAM. TODAY WAS YOUR FIRST TASTE. IT WAS A PRETTY MILD DAY. SOMETIMES IT CAN BE A [02:10:04] LITTLE CRAZY. BUT YOU WILL SEE THE DIFFERENCE. AND IT WILL TEACH A LOT AROUND LEADERSHIP, YOU ARE LEADING FROM A PARTICULAR SEE. PLEASE CONTINUE TO LEAD FROM THAT SEAT FOR THE NEXT 179 DAYS YOU HAVE LEFT OF SCHOOL. YOU ARE SO WELCOME HERE. ALL FIVE OF US ARE HERE TO SUPPORT YOU IN YOUR GROWTH AND LEARNING. IF YOU EVER HAVE A QUESTION FOR ANY OF US, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT. YOU DO HAVE AN ACTUAL MENTOR IN MR. GARCIA. I KNOW HE HAS BEEN WALKING YOU THROUGH THINGS AND HELPING YOU. IF YOU NEED US, WE ARE HERE AS WELL. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. WITH THAT BEING SAID, ADRIANA, I KNOW YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ANY MORE COMMENTS. >> I JUST WANT TO SAY, AN IMMENSE THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART TO ALL OF YOU GUYS. THANK YOU, FROM THE START OF THE INTERVIEW, EVEN BEFORE MR. GARCIA MENTORING ME, I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THE LOVE AND SUPPORT YOU'VE GIVEN ME AND MY FAMILY. I AM JUST SO GRATEFUL TO BE HERE. I AM SO EXCITED FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR. APPLAUSE ] >> THANK YOU FOR THAT. WITH THAT ENDING, I AM GOING TO ASK FOR AN ADJOURNMENT. >> MOTION. >> PLEASE PUSH YOUR AND THEN CAST YOUR VOTE * This transcript was compiled from uncorrected Closed Captioning.
