WHEN YOU LOOK AROUND IN OUR COMMUNITY, I LOVE HAVING CONVERSATIONS WITH GRANDPARENTS THAT COME IN AND SAY, I WAS IN KINDERGARTEN IN 19 -- IN 1950, YOU KNOW? I WAS IN THE FIRST CLASS. THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY IS VERY STRONG.

HAVING THAT COMMUNITY WHERE MORE THAN 50, 60, 70% OF THE PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY SPEAK SPANISH, IT IS SAYING, WE KNOW YOU ARE THERE. WE ACKNOWLEDGE YOU AND WE ARE EMBRACING YOU AND WE ARE SHOWCASING YOU AND WE ARE DOING THAT TO THE ACADEMICS BUT WE ARE DOING THAT WITH THE CLUBS, ALL OF THE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING. THAT, FOR PEOPLE , TO FEEL LIKE

THEY'RE PART OF SOMETHING, THEY NEED TO BE LIKED, ACCEPTED, AND UNDERSTOOD AND BELONGING TO OR FEELING LIKE WE BELONG SOMEWHERE IS ONE OF OUR A SICK NEEDS. WHEN WE HAVE AS MANY CLUBS AS WE HAVE IN ANY SCHOOL, IT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE ARE ESTABLISHING OPTIONS AND WHEN WE HAVE OPTIONS BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ONE TYPE OF STUDENT, WE HAVE MANY STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT NEEDS AND MANY THINGS THAT THEY LIKE, IT GIVES THEM A PLACE WHERE, IF I CAN HAVE THE ROBOTICS, I CAN DO CHEERLEADING. OR, YOU KNOW WHAT, I CAN DO STUDENT LEADERSHIP. KEEPS THEM ENGAGED IN CREATIVE THINGS. I WANT TO BE HOPEFUL FOR THE FUTURE. THEY ARE COLLABORATING AND COMMUNICATING AND DOING THAT THROUGH THE CREATIVE PROCESS.

>> I REMEMBER VIVIDLY IN FOURTH GRADE, MY MOM TOLD ME ABOUT IT AND I WAS THINKING OF IT AND THEN, I TOLD HER, YEAH. IT TURNS OUT I REALLY ENJOY IT. I STILL WANT TO BE INVOLVED AFTER I LEAVE REDWOOD SINCE REDWOOD INTRODUCED ME.

>> WHAT I LIKE IS THE DANCING, THE DANCES, THE HERITAGE, THE

CULTURE. >> WHAT I THINK ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS, PROBLEM SOLVING AND BEING CONSISTENT TO SOLVE MORE DIFFICULT AND CHALLENGING PROBLEMS.

>> THE COMPANY PROVIDES SOME COMPETITIONS FOR US TO BE INVOLVED IN AND THEY PROGRESS FROM AN ENTRY-LEVEL, FIRST COMPETITION TO MORE AN ELIMINATION MODEL AND WE HAVE A LARGE TEAM HERE. WE ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE ABOUT 30 STUDENTS. WE HAVE PROGRESSED PRETTY GOOD , UP UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR, WE EVEN HAD STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL. THAT WAS OUR FIRST YEAR. IT WAS PRETTY GOOD, I

THOUGHT. >> IT IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO REFLECT ON BEST PRACTICES AND THINGS THAT ARE HAVING CONTINUITY. THAT WAS PART OF THE VISION, THAT FIRST WEEKEND WITH MR. CHAVEZ THAT ONE DAY, HOPEFULLY WE WOULD START A DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM IN OUR DISTRICT AND HERE WE ARE YEARS LATER, ALMOST COMPLETING THE CYCLE WITH SIXTH GRADE NEXT

YEAR. >> I THINK IT IS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS BECAUSE IN THE PROGRAM, PARENTS HAVE CHOICE AS TO WHETHER THEY WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO BE BILINGUAL AND WE ALSO HAVE A CULTURAL ASPECT PIECE WHERE WE HAVE A LOT OF ACTIVITIES AND LESSONS THAT ARE INCORPORATED AS PART OF DLI.

THE OTHER THING THAT REALLY BENEFITS, THAT WORKS TO OUR ADVANTAGE IS, WE WORK CLOSELY WITH OUR ENGLISH COUNTERPARTS IN OUR GRADE LEVELS SO WE COLLABORATE AND WE PLAN.

REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT IS IN ENGLISH OR IN SPANISH, THEY ARE BOTH DOING SIMILAR ACTIVITIES OR SIMILAR PROJECTS.

IT IS THE BEST JOB I COULD EVER HAVE AND NOT JUST BECAUSE I WORK WITH A GREAT GROUP OF PROFESSIONALS BUT ALSO, WE HAVE A GREAT GROUP OF KIDS ALL OVER. WE HAVE CHEERLEADERS HERE TODAY BUT WE HAVE SO MUCH AT REDWOOD. I WANT TO TAKE A MINUTE TO INTRODUCE SOME OF THE STAFF MEMBERS THAT CAME WITH ME TODAY. WE HAVE OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL. ALSO, WE WILL SEE THE HORSES AND GO TO THE THERAPY THING THAT WILL HELP THEM TRANSFORM THE LIVES OF CHILDREN. ALL IN ALL, THIS IS A PROGRAM THAT WILL REALLY HELP SUPPLEMENT AND UPLIFT CHILDREN IN A WAY WHERE THEY WILL BREAK THE CYCLES. THIS IS A COUNTY FUNDED PROGRAM, WHERE THEY WILL COME IN AND PROVIDE ASSEMBLIES, WORKSHOPS, WEEKEND CLASSES TO HELP BREAK THOSE CYCLES, HELP BUILD THE NEED OF RESILIENCIES WITHIN THE SCHOOLS. NOW SINCE I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS PROGRAM, I HAVE SEEN CHILDREN REALLY TRANSFORM AND MAKE THOSE CHOICES. AND THE OVERTURNED POLICY ON IMMIGRANT RATES TO HAPPEN IN SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, PLAYGROUNDS, BUS STOPS, DAYCARES, AFTER SCHOOL FACILITIES, AND THE PLACES OF WORSHIP.
