IT IS A PASSION BECAUSE I REMEMBER READING IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I KIND OF WANT TO DO SOME OF THE SAME THINGS THAT WE WENT THROUGH WERE ACTUALLY BIGGER AND BETTER. EVERY YEAR I LOOK AT ACTIVITIES.

I LOOK AT THINGS AND ASK MYSELF, OKAY, HOW CAN WE DO IT BETTER?

HOW CAN WE IMPROVE? >> I'M IN FIFTH GRADE AND I'M THE PRESIDENT OF CITY COUNCIL. MY JOB AS STUDENT COUNCIL IS TO DO THE RIGHT THING WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING AND TO STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT. SO I HAVE BEEN IN STUDENT COUNCIL FOR THREE YEARS.

WHY I THINK IT IS GOOD TO BE IN STUDENT COUNCIL IS BECAUSE THE STUDENT COUNCIL THEY TEACH YOU HOW TO BE A GOOD STUDENT. WE DO A LOT OF FUN ACTIVITIES . AND THEY TEACH US HOW TO BE

RESPONSIBLE AND NICE. >> INCORPORATING FUN ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY AND EVEN AFTER SCHOOL GIVES THEM -- SOME OF THE KIDS THAT ARE SOMETIMES NOT ALWAYS SUCCESSFUL FIND SUCCESS IN OTHER WAYS. THEY FIND THINGS THAT MOTIVATE THEM OR ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO BETTER. I WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS, SO I'M GOING TO REALLY TRY TO MOTIVATE AND TO WANT TO BE AT SCHOOL. MOTIVATE THEM TO BE ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE STUDENT COUNCIL IN THE ELEMENTARY BECAUSE IT TEACHES THEM LEADERSHIP. TO BE ORGANIZED. TO BE ROLE MODELS . IT ENCOURAGES THEM TO BE ADVOCATES FOR THEMSELVES. I'VE HAD KIDS THAT USUALLY TEACHERS PICK OR WE KIND OF LOOK AT KIDS TO BRING INTO STUDENT COUNCIL. I'VE HAD KIDS THAT HAVE ADVOCATED FOR THEMSELVES AND SAID, I WOULD LIKE TO BE A STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBER. AND JUST TALKING TO THEM, THEY WILL SAY, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? AND THEY WORK FOR IT. AND REALLY IT IS SOMETHING THEY REALLY WANT TO DO. SO THEY ARE GOING TO WORK EVEN HARDER THAN ANYBODY ELSE. WE ARE TRYING TO INCORPORATE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING , ART, AND MATH. AND I THINK ART IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR KIDS BECAUSE THEY NOT ONLY LEARN ABOUT THE ART, BUT THEY LEARN ABOUT THE PERSON. THE ARTIST. AND THEY LEARNED THE TECHNIQUES.

AND THEY LEARN TO BE ABLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES. SOME OF THE KIDS MIGHT NOT BE GREAT WRITERS, BUT WHEN THEY ARE WRITING ABOUT SOMETHING THEY ARE REALLY INTO, IT REALLY MOTIVATES THEM.

>> I THINK IT IS JUST IMPORTANT TO TREAT OTHERS HOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED. SOME OF MY RESPONSIBILITIES ARE TO BE A LEADER AND BE RESPECTFUL TO EVERYONE , AND BE A ROLE MODEL.

>> SO WE HAVE THE AVID PROGRAM HERE. SO WE ARE DOING AVID AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL . A LOT OF THE ACTIVITIES WE DO ARE IN THE WICKER CATEGORY. THAT IS WRITING, INQUIRY, COLLABORATION, ORGANIZATION, AND READING. SO A LOT OF WHAT WE DO WITH AVID STEMS FROM THAT ACRONYM. SO WHAT AVID HAS HELPED US DO HERE IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER SCHOOLS THAT DON'T USE AVID IS THAT IT GIVES THE SYSTEMS FOR BEING CONSISTENT THROUGHOUT THE GRADE LEVELS , AND THE KIDS WILL START GETTING TRAINED, LET'S SAY, IN NOTETAKING . AND THEN THAT DEVELOPS AND GOES THROUGH STAGES. BY THE TIME THEY GET DONE WITH THEIR EDUCATION AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE A SET OF SKILLS THAT THEY MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD HAD THEY GONE TO ANOTHER SCHOOL.

>> REFLECTION IS A BIG PART OF MY DAILY JOB . EVERY DAY I TAKE THE TIME TO REFLECT AND THINK, OKAY. HOW COULD I HAVE HANDLED THAT? COULD I HAVE DONE BETTER? IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT IMPROVING AND DOING BETTER FOR OUR KIDS. THAT IS MY BIGGEST PASSION IN LIFE.

>> ALL RIGHT. SO OUR SCHOOL WAS BUILT ABOUT 45 YEARS AGO. IN 2022 WE HAD THE PLEASURE OF -- A HUGE '80S THEME. IT WAS FABULOUS. 43 YEARS OLD NOW. ALMOST 43. OUR SCHOOL ENCOMPASSES PRESCHOOL TEACHER -- STUDENTS ALL THE WAY TO FIFTH GRADE. WE HAVE ABOUT 440 STUDENTS . TRY TO BUILD A FAMILY IN COLLABORATIVE CULTURE . WE WANT TO HAVE A SCHOOL WHERE YOU WOULD WANT YOUR OWN CHILDREN TO COME TO. WE ARE VERY COHESIVE, VERY FAMILY ORIENTED. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS. LET'S DO WHAT IS BEST FOR STUDENTS. THIS YEAR WE CHOSE OUR FOCUS AREA FOR ACTIVE COGNITIVE ENGAGEMENT BECAUSE WE REALLY FEEL THAT IF WE ARE GOING TO MOVE STUDENTS FORWARD IN INSTRUCTION, WE REALLY NEED TO FIND WAYS TO MOTIVATE THEM AND ENGAGE THEM.

THAT IS WHY ELEMENTARY IS VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR SCHOOL. IT IS ABOUT THE WICOR STRATEGY. OUR TEACHERS -- ALMOST MY ENTIRE STAFF HAS BEEN TRAINED IN AVID ELEMENTARY. WE HAVE A COLLEGE GOING ATMOSPHERE WHERE ON WEDNESDAYS WE PROMOTE WEARING SPIRIT WHERE FOR YOUR FAVORITE COLLEGE . OR SOMETIMES OUR STAFF MEMBERS -- THEIR CHILDREN WENT THERE SO THEY WEAR THEIR SPIRIT WHERE. AND THAT IS SOMETHING WE TRY TO PROMOTE EVERY WEDNESDAY.

IN THE FALL WE ALSO HAVE A COLLEGE AND CAREER DAY THAT WE ALWAYS INVITE THE COMMUNITY TO COME OUT AND TALK ABOUT THEIR PROSPECTIVE CAREERS AS WELL AS TO TALK ABOUT COLLEGE LIFE AND WHAT THEY MAY LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE. WE DO HAVE A COMMITMENT TO STEAM. YOU SAW THERE WERE SOME PICTURES AND VIDEO IN THE S.T.E.A.M. ROOM. WE WERE ABLE TO BUY A LOT OF THE EQUIPMENT AND THINGS TO HOUSE SUPPLIES FOR TEACHERS TO COME IN AND DO ACTIVITIES FOR S.T.E.A.M.. OUR ORDINATOR AFTER SCHOOL ALSO DOES S.T.E.A.M. ACTIVITIES. AT THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE MY COUNSELOR TO INTERJECT WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT AND HE IS GOING TO TALK ABOUT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING, AND I WILL CLOSE IT

ON A MONTHLY SCHEDULE, I PRESENT TO ALL STUDENTS USING TEAMS AS ONE OF THE SIX PILLARS OF CHARACTER FROM THE JOSEPH INSTITUTE , WHICH ARE TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, FAIRNESS, CARING, AND CITIZENSHIP. ADDITIONALLY, AS A SCHOOL, WE APPLY THE AVID STRATEGIES MENTIONED TO PROMOTE HIGHER EDUCATION. AVID PROVIDES COMMON TERMS AND ASSISTANTS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SKILLS FOR SUCCESS. I GREET COLLEAGUES IN OUR DISTRICT , COUNTY, STATE, AND NATION AS WE CELEBRATE NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK. YOU ARE A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF THOSE INTERESTED TO SUPPORT THE DREAMS OF OUR FAMILIES THAT THEY HAVE FOR THEIR CHILDREN. STEADFAST MODELING OF GOOD CHARACTER OF ALL OF OUR FAMILIES , OUR ADMINISTRATOR, OUR SITE STAFF , AND MANY FROM OUR DISTRICT DEPARTMENTS THAT VISIT OUR SCHOOL SITE CONTRIBUTES TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR STUDENTS. WE SERVE WITH GREAT COMMITMENT AND EFFORT. THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT SUPPORT AND DIRECTION IS ACKNOWLEDGED AND IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU.

WE REALLY WANT TO WORK HARD TO KEEP OUR STUDENTS IN SCHOOL EVERY DAY LEARNING AND DEAL WITH ANY SITUATION THAT COMES UP IN A POSITIVE MANNER TO REINFORCE THAT CHARACTER COUNTS, AND WE ARE ALL WORKING TOGETHER.

SO SOME OF THE CLUBS WE HAVE WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT STUDENT COUNSEL -- YOU KNOW, I'M REALLY GRATEFUL THAT THE LOP FUNDS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SUPPORT MY STUDENT COUNSEL THIS YEAR BECAUSE IN THE PAST WE HAVE ONLY BEEN ABLE TO MEET ONCE A WEEK. BUT BECAUSE OF THE LOP, WE ARE ABLE TO MEET TWICE A WEEK FOR A LITTLE BIT LONGER, SO THEY ARE ABLE TO INCORPORATE SOME OF THE CHARACTER COUNTS LEADERSHIP, FUTURE LIFE SKILLS, CULMINATING ACTIVITIES. FIRST TIME EVER WE ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THEM TO DISNEYLAND FOR A LEADERSHIP TRAINING AS WELL. WE ARE SO EXCITED. WE THINK THE DISTRICT FOR THAT SUPPORT BECAUSE WITHOUT THAT, WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GO THERE.

ALSO WE HAVE A RUNNING CLUB EVERY YEAR THAT WE START IN FEBRUARY. WE DO AN ANNUAL 5K. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US THIS YEAR, WE WILL MAKE SURE YOU GET THAT SPECIAL INVITE. AND OUR KIDS DO COMPETE, AND THEY LOVE IT BECAUSE THEY COMPETE. OUR STUDENTS FOR SECOND AND THIRD. GIRLS FOR SECOND AND THIRD.

EVERY SINGLE RUNNER GETS A MEDAL FOR FINISHING THE 5K. IT IS AN AWESOME EVENT EVERY SINGLE YEAR. WE DO IT ON CAMPUS. FIVE TIMES AROUND THE CAMPUS. MEASURE IT OUT, AND IT IS 5K. ALSO, WE HAVE A DRAMA CLUB. THIS YEAR THEY ARE GOING TO DO -- AND ALSO PROVIDED THROUGH -- SO IN CLOSING, OHANA MEANS FAMILY. FAMILY MEANS NOBODY GETS LEFT BEHIND OR FORGOTTEN. THEY ATTENDED A DISTRICT SPONSORED LITERACY TRAINING THAT EMPHASIZED READING AND WRITING USING INFORMATIONAL TEXT . 75% OF OUR SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS HAD ATTENDED THE CONTENT SPECIFIC PD THAT FOCUSES ON THEIR INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS AREAS AND SUPPORTING LITERACY AND DEVELOPMENT THROUGH VOCABULARY AND THROUGH THE WRITING PROCESS. WHEN IT COMES TO OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS AND RECLASSIFICATION, SOMETHING THAT WAS VERY DIFFERENT THIS YEAR AND INCREDIBLY EXCITING WAS THAT FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR WE HAD 885 STUDENTS WHO WERE UP FOR RECLASSIFICATION, MEANING THAT THEY WERE ELIGIBLE TO BE RECLASSIFIED, WHICH IS HUGE BECAUSE SO OFTEN STUDENTS THAT ARE EL STUDENTS ARE EL AND STUCK IN AN ADDITIONAL ELD CLASS OR IN EXTRA SUPPORTS. ALSO THIS YEAR WE WERE ABLE TO LAUNCH AND IMPLEMENT THE DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS AND WE DID THAT FOR FALL AND FOR WINTER AS WELL. ON THE NEXT SLIDE I WANTED TO SHOW YOU SOME OF THE RESULTS FROM THE FIRST ADMINISTRATION OF THE FALL TO WINTER COMPARISON . AS YOU CAN SEE, THE COLUMN ON THE LEFT IS FALL. ON THE CHART TO THE RIGHT YOU WILL SEE FOR MATHEMATICS LOOKING AT THE GREEN BARS AS WELL THERE IS A 26% INCREASE IN AT OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL COMPARING FALL TO WINTER. AND THEN AT THE SAME NOTE THERE WAS ALSO A DECREASE IN THE RED OF 10% FOR READING AT 15% FOR MATHEMATICS. SO THINGS ARE TRENDING THE RIGHT WAY.

POLICIES ON BANNING FLAGS OR ANY POLITICAL MATERIAL INDEED ARE NOT VIEWPOINT VIRTUAL THAT THE FLAGS WOULD CONVEY AND DOES NOT SATISFY THE BURDEN OF SUBSTANTIAL DISRUPTION SET FORTH BY THE SUPREME COURT. TAKE HEED OF OUR NEIGHBORS TO THE NORTH AND DON'T WASTE OUR TAX DOLLARS. THIRD, THIS POLICY IS GOING TO HARM EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES. BIDEN PROPOSED LETTER OF POLICY, A FRENCH TEACHER WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DISPLAY THE FLAG OF FRENCH IN A CLASSROOM DEDICATED TO THAT LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. LIKEWISE, THIS FLAG IS GOING TO RESTRICT A SPIRITED CLASSROOM FROM CELEBRATING THEIR PRIDE AND EVERYTHING FROM THEIR IDENTITY TO OUR WORLD CHAMPION DODGERS OR THEIR SCHOOLS WITH BANNERS OR FLAGS.
