AND WE WANT THEM TO HAVE BETTER OPPORTUNITIES IF THEY DO DECIDE NOT TO DO THAT, BECAUSE WE HAVE KNOWN ONCE THEY GET A GREAT JOB OR DEVELOP A SKILL OR CAREER, THEY THEN TURN AROUND AND GET SENT TO COLLEGE ON THE DIME OF THE EMPLOYER THAT THEY NOW WORK FOR. AND WE'VE SEEN THAT.
I THINK YOU WENT FROM 20 TO 62. AND NOW FONTANA'S CONSIDERED A MODEL IN THIS STATE FOR MAKING SURE THAT EVERY CHILD HAS AN OPPORTUNITY, NO MATTER WHAT PATHWAY THEY TAKE.
SO THIS IS PART OF THIS HONOR. THE OTHER PART IS WHENEVER THERE WAS A PROGRAM WHERE THE CITY AND THE BOARD COULD WORK TOGETHER, YOU STEPPED UP, CONTACTED US IMMEDIATELY AND WORKED WITH US, AND THAT WAS IMPORTANT.
WE ALWAYS WANT ALL OF OUR RESIDENTS BE SAFE. THERE'S THERE'S SO MUCH CHATTER GOING ON RIGHT NOW ABOUT OUR PEOPLE SAFE IN THIS COUNTRY. IT IS THE JOB OF EVERY ELECTED OFFICIAL TO ALWAYS MAKE THAT THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY.
AND THE REASON WHY WE MAKE THAT A PRIORITY IS ONCE PEOPLE ARE SAFE, WHETHER THEY'RE A RESIDENT, WHETHER THEY'RE AN IMMIGRANT, WHETHER THEY'RE A BUSINESS LEADER, WHETHER THEY'RE AN ELECTED OFFICIAL, OR WHETHER THEY'RE JUST GLAD TO BE HERE, EVERYTHING FALLS IN PLACE.
WHEN PEOPLE FEEL SAFE, THEY OPERATE IN A WHOLE DIFFERENT MATTER.
THEY REPORT CRIMES. THEY TELL US HOW WE CAN HELP THEM BETTER.
THEY MAKE SURE THAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE SAFE. AND THAT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.
AND ADAM, WHEN YOU CAME TO ME AND YOU SAID, I REALLY WANT TO BEEF UP THE FONTANA SCHOOL POLICE, YOU HIT RIGHT HERE FOR ME. YOU BROUGHT ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF WHAT A CHIEF DOES IN BRINGING RICH RANDOLPH HERE.

WE HAVE BEEN ON STEROIDS, PROVIDING HOUSING, COUNSELING, WHATEVER IT TAKES AND I NEED YOUR HELP.
I KNOW YOU HAVE TO BE 18 AND ABOVE. I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO JUMP UP AND VOLUNTEER RIGHT AWAY, BUT ANYBODY THAT WOULD LIKE TO COME OUT AND HELP US, PLEASE.

AND IF YOU LOOK THROUGHOUT THE STATE, THERE'S NOT VERY MANY SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT ARE ABLE TO WORK WITH THEIR CITY COUNCIL AND AND WITH THEIR COUNTY SUPERVISOR BECAUSE OF POLITICAL DIFFERENCES. THE ONE THING I CAN SAY ABOUT EVERYBODY IN ON WHO'S SITTING IN THAT FRONT ROW IS THAT IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE DEMOCRAT, REPUBLICAN OR ANYTHING. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT THEY WANT TO SEE IS THE PROTECTION, THE EDUCATION AND THE SAFETY OF KIDS.

ONE WAY TO THINK ABOUT DISTANCE FROM STANDARD IS HOW FAR WE ARE AWAY FROM THE TARGET.

IN 2223, 45% OF OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS MADE PROGRESS LAST YEAR, 44% MADE PROGRESS.
WHILE THAT IS SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN OUR INITIAL YEAR IN 2223, IT IS A GAIN OVER THE PRIOR YEAR.
I'M ESPECIALLY PROUD TO TALK ABOUT OUR GRADUATION RATES.
WE HAVE DEMONSTRATED CONSISTENT GROWTH SINCE 2223.
WE DO FIND THAT OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS AND STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES GRADUATE AT LOWER RATES, AND SO THAT WILL BECOME AN AREA OF FOCUS. THIS INDICATOR REPRESENTS THE PERCENTAGES OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES WHO GRADUATE PREPARED FOR COLLEGE OR CAREER.
ADDITIONALLY, FONTANA EXCEEDS THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA BY 10% IN THIS AREA.
THIS CHART REPRESENTS THE PERCENTAGES OF STUDENTS WHO ARE CHRONICALLY ABSENT.
THIS IS A CASE WHERE WE WANT TO SEE THOSE BARS DECLINE.
AND IN FACT, WE HAVE IN 22, 23, 30% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE CHRONICALLY ABSENT.
LAST YEAR, 24% WERE CHRONICALLY ABSENT. THAT WAS A SLIGHT INCREASE OVER THE PRIOR YEAR.
AS OF YESTERDAY, OUR CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM PERCENTAGE IS 17.5.
SIMILARLY, FOR SUSPENSION IN 2223, 4% OF OUR STUDENTS WERE SUSPENDED.
WE'VE STEADILY DECREASED THAT TO 2% OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
OUR TARGET FOR THIS YEAR IS 1%, AND AS OF YESTERDAY, 1.1% OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED.
AND THERE'S TWO INDICATORS THAT REPRESENT HOW CONNECTED STUDENTS FEEL TO SCHOOL.
THIS FIRST ONE IS SENSE OF BELONGING. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT STARTING ON THE LEFT IN 2223, ONLY 56% OF OUR STUDENTS FELT THAT THEY BELONGED ON THEIR CAMPUSES. HOWEVER, AS OF THIS PAST FALL, WE ARE NOW AT 63%.
SO WE'VE DEMONSTRATED SOME CONSIDERABLE GROWTH IN THIS AREA.
ONE THING I DO WANT TO POINT OUT IS THIS CHART REPRESENTS ALL STUDENTS.
THIS DOES DROP SOME IN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL.
THIS IS SIMILAR FOR TEACHER STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS.

THE THIRD IS PROACTIVE COMMUNICATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
AND THE FOURTH ONE IS PURPOSEFUL USE OF FISCAL, PUBLIC RESOURCES AND FISCAL SUSTAINABILITY.
SO WE DO HAVE A TEAM OF PEOPLE FROM TEACHING AND LEARNING, AND ALSO FROM STUDENT SERVICES WHO ARE WORKING TO PROVIDE MULTI-TIERED LEVELS OF SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS THAT'S IN THE ACADEMIC, THE BEHAVIORAL AND ALSO IN THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL AREAS OF STUDENTS.
IT'S REALLY A FOCUS ON THE WHOLE CHILD. AND WE'VE BEEN VERY ACTIVE.
AND THIS MONDAY WE ROLLED OUT A NEW PROGRAM, UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING, WHICH FOCUSES ON PROVIDING ACCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS REGARDLESS, DISREGARDING ANY NEEDS THAT THEY HAVE AND MAKING SURE THAT THEY CAN ACCESS THE CURRICULUM.
AND WE HAVE TWO SCHOOLS THAT ARE PILOTING THAT RIGHT NOW, AND WE'LL BE MOVING FORWARD WITH TRAINING FOR ALL OF OUR TEACHERS AND ALL OF OUR MANAGEMENT STAFF IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS AS SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES FACE SOME EXTREME CHALLENGES IN THEIR LEARNING.
WE KNOW THAT THE LCAP MANDATES THAT WE FOCUS ON SOME UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDERPERFORMING POPULATIONS, SUCH AS OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS, OUR FOSTER YOUTH, AND OUR LOW INCOME STUDENTS.
WE ARE IN A PROGRAM WITH THE COUNTY AND THE STATE REFERRED TO AS DIFFERENTIATED ASSISTANCE, AND IT'S BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND OUR FOSTER YOUTH HAVE STRUGGLED.
TODAY, WE HAD A GROUP OF NINE EDUCATIONAL LEADERS WORKING WITH THE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENTS TEAM TO DEVELOP A PLAN FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, SPECIFICALLY FOCUSED ON HELPING TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES.
SO WE'RE VERY ACTIVE AND VERY SERIOUS ABOUT THAT PARTICULAR ENDEAVOR.
OUR MULTILINGUAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES UPDATE.
AS YOU KNOW, LAST MONTH YOU HIRED A NEW SENIOR DIRECTOR TO COME AND HELP US TO SHOULDER THE BURDEN AND TO LEAD A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS. WE BELIEVE THAT MULTILINGUALISM IS A STRENGTH FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND WE REALLY EXPECT THAT OUR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO TO SPEAK MULTIPLE LANGUAGES WILL GIVE THEM AN ADVANTAGE SIMILAR TO THE ADVANTAGES THAT MISS HOLLY WAS TALKING ABOUT.
WHEN OUR STUDENTS ARE GOING INTO THE WORKFORCE AFTER AFTER GRADUATION WE RECENTLY RECOGNIZED 286 SENIORS WHO ALREADY HAVE MET THE STATE'S CALIFORNIA STATE SEAL OF BILITERACY REQUIREMENTS EVEN BEFORE THEIR SENIOR YEAR STARTED.
AND WE EXPECT THAT NUMBER TO GO UP SIGNIFICANTLY THROUGH THE COURSE OF THIS SENIOR YEAR.

WE WERE FEATURED RECENTLY IN A CURRICULUM ASSOCIATES SPOTLIGHT FOR THE WORK THAT WE'VE DONE TO ENSURE THAT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS ARE READING BY THIRD GRADE AND STUDENTS, OUR STAFF ARE BEING TRAINED ACROSS ALL OF OUR ELEMENTARY GRADE LEVELS IN MATHEMATICS WE'RE WERE PREPARING FOR AN ADOPTION FOR NEW MATERIALS, AND OUR OUTSTANDING MATHEMATICS TEAM HAS DEVELOPED A VISION AND A PLAN TO ENSURE THAT ALL STUDENTS ARE POWERFUL USERS OF OF MATHEMATICS IN THE FONTANA SCHOOL DISTRICT.
IT'S REALLY BEEN EXCITING WORK WATCHING THEM COLLABORATIVELY WORK AND LEAD ACROSS OUR DISTRICT.
MR. MCGAUGH ALREADY POINTED OUT THAT WE HAD SOME GOOD SCORES IN SCIENCE.
THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR THAT SCIENCE IS REPRESENTED ON THE DASHBOARD WITH A PARTICULAR COLOR AND AND RATING, AND WE WERE PLEASED TO SEE THE GROWTH THERE. WE'VE ALIGNED OUR CURRICULUM WITH THE NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS.
WE'VE SEEN LOTS OF HANDS ON AND 21ST CENTURY LEARNING HAPPENING IN SCIENCE, SOME FUN ACTIVITIES THAT ALSO PUSHED THE KIDS TO BE ENGAGED WITH THE WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING. AND AS FAR AS CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION WE REALLY APPRECIATED YOU ATTENDING THE THE EVENT THAT WE HAD ON MONDAY. WE THOUGHT IT WAS EXCITING ALSO TO REALLY BRING OUR EDUCATORS AND OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS TOGETHER.

MAYOR WARREN TALKED ABOUT THE HOMELESS COUNTS. LAST YEAR THE CITY DID ESTABLISH A HOMELESS LIAISON OFFICER THAT WORKS WITH OUR HOMELESS POPULATION, AND WE WORK DIRECTLY WITH THEM SO THAT THIS WAY, IF THERE'S A FAMILY THAT'S IN NEED THAT EITHER WE IDENTIFY OR THEY IDENTIFY, WE'RE ABLE TO WORK WITH OUR OFFICE AND PROVIDE THE STUDENTS THE SUPPORT AND THE ENROLLMENT THAT THEY NEED. AND WE'LL CONTINUE THAT PARTNERSHIP.AND SO WE'RE CONTINUING THAT AGAIN THIS YEAR, AND THEN WE'LL CONTINUE INTO THIS YEAR AS WELL.

ONE EXAMPLE IS THE SUPERINTENDENT STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL, WHICH NOW BRINGS TOGETHER MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT REPRESENTATION FROM ACROSS THE DISTRICT. THESE STUDENTS MEET DIRECTLY WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES, OFFER FEEDBACK, AND HELP SHAPE DISTRICT PRIORITIES.
THEIR VOICES CONTINUE TO BE A POWERFUL GUIDE FOR OUR WORK.
WE HAVE ALSO EXPANDED OUR COMMUNITY BASED ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS.
OUR DISTRICT WIDE COFFEY AND CONNECTION SESSIONS GIVE FAMILIES, PARTNERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS A WELCOMING SPACE TO TALK WITH DISTRICT LEADERSHIP, ASK QUESTIONS AND SHARE IDEAS. AT THE SCHOOL LEVEL, PRINCIPALS ARE HOSTING COFFEE CHATS OR COFFEES WITH THE PRINCIPALS EVENTS TO BUILD STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILIES ON CAMPUS.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT EFFORT IS OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP EXCHANGE, WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER BUSINESS LEADERS, ELECTED OFFICIALS, SERVICE CLUBS, CIVIC GROUPS, NONPROFITS, AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS.

WE HAVE 23 OF OUR ADMINISTRATORS IN THE CLEAR ADMINISTRATIVE CREDENTIAL.
WE PARTNERED WITH ACSA THIS YEAR TO ENSURE THAT THOSE TEACHERS THAT WERE AND ADMINISTRATORS ARE LOOKING AT GETTING A CLEAR CREDENTIAL FOR THEIR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES CREDENTIAL. HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO.
WE ARE ALSO LOOKING AT PROFESSIONAL GROWTH MONITORING, WHICH IS FOR OUR CERTIFICATED TEACHERS.
THEY ARE DOING ADDITIONAL HOURS OR DOING ADDITIONAL COURSEWORK.
AND SO HR GATHERS ALL THOSE PIECES AND IT'S SORT OF AN INCENTIVE BECAUSE THE MORE TRAINING THEY RECEIVE, THEY ARE ABLE TO MOVE OVER ON THE SALARY SCHEDULE IF THEY MATCH THE UNITS OR THE HOURS IN THE TRAININGS.

THEN CAME NEXT. WHAT FELT LIKE THE FINAL INSULT PROMOTING A CURRICULUM TO TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO BUDGET WHEN FAR TOO MANY OF OUR CHILDREN CANNOT READ, WRITE, OR DO MATH AT GRADE LEVEL. BUDGETING WHEN FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS ARE MISSING.
