SHE'S GOING TO RECOGNIZE OUR CIF STATE CHAMPIONS SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL CHEER.

GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT RAMIREZ, VICE PRESIDENT SERNA, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, SUPERINTENDENT AND ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE THAT ARE GATHERED HERE TODAY TO CELEBRATE OUR AMAZING SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL GAME DAY STATE CHAMPIONS.

THIS MARKS THE FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN GAME DAY.

THEY HAVE ANOTHER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR CHEER FOR ONE OF THE MORE TRADITIONAL ROUTINES.

BUT THIS IS THE FIRST FOR GAME DAY. SO IT'S A PRETTY AWESOME EXPERIENCE THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO GO AND COMPETE AND BE THE STATE CHAMPIONS.

I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE DOCTOR RICHMOND AND COACH CERDA TO SAY A FEW WORDS AS WELL.

THANK YOU GUYS FOR THIS THIS RECOGNITION. I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE LONG.

I'M GOING TO GIVE THIS HONOR OVER TO MR., BECAUSE THE WORK THAT THE KIDS PUT IN THAT MR. AND HIS COACHES PUT IN NEEDS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

I WANT TO THANK THE BOARD AS WELL FOR THEIR DUE DILIGENCE TO MAKING SURE THEY RECOGNIZE THIS, THIS MOMENT AS WELL. THESE GUYS PUT IN SO MUCH WORK SEEING THEM PERFORM IN SUCH AN AMAZING FEAT.

WE WORKED HARD EVERY SINGLE DAY, PUSHING THROUGH CHALLENGES AND GROWING STRONGER TOGETHER.

EVEN WHEN WE STRUGGLED TO FIND PLACES TO PRACTICE AFTER BEING KICKED OUT, WE DIDN'T GIVE UP.

WE KEPT PUSHING OURSELVES TO OUR LIMITS. WHAT MADE IT SPECIAL WAS OUR TEAM CHEMISTRY.

WE TRUSTED EACH OTHER, SUPPORTED ONE ANOTHER, AND TRULY BECAME A FAMILY.

I'M SO PROUD OF EVERYTHING WE'VE ACCOMPLISHED AND I'M GRATEFUL TO BE PART OF THIS TEAM.

MY NAME IS LEONARD FISHER, AND I'M A PROUD PRINCIPAL AT SHADOW HILLS ELEMENTARY.

IT IS TRULY AN HONOR TO BE HERE THIS EVENING.

I'M ALSO PLEASED TO BE JOINED BY A FEW MEMBERS OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY WHO ARE WITH ME HERE TONIGHT, MISS CRISTINA REYES, ONE OF OUR FIFTH GRADE TEACHERS.

LEONARDO HERRERA AND LARISSA GARCIA, BOTH OUTSTANDING FIFTH GRADE SCHOLARS AND THEIR FAMILY.

THANK YOU FOR PROVIDING US WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE SOME OF THE GREAT THINGS HAPPENING AT SHADOW HILLS.

TO BEGIN, WE WOULD LIKE TO SHARE A BRIEF VIDEO, MR. GARCIA. GREAT THINGS HERE AT THE SCHOOL, JUST BEING AROUND THE STUDENTS.

GREAT THINGS HERE AT THE SCHOOL. JUST BEING AROUND THE STUDENTS EVERY SINGLE DAY AND WATCHING THEM GROW AS INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE.

IT'S AMAZING. IT'S TRULY HEARTWARMING. I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HERE AT SHADOW HILLS IS BUILDING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY.

SO WORKING WITH OUR TEACHERS, OUR STAFF, OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES AND COMING TOGETHER TO BUILD SOMETHING UNITED HAS ALLOWED US TO MOVE FORWARD TOGETHER. WE'VE CREATED A PROGRAM AROUND THE FOUR B'S.

OUR FOUR BEES ARE WHAT SHAPE OUR EXPECTATIONS, AND THAT IS THAT WE'RE HERE TO BE RESPECTFUL, TO BE RESPONSIBLE, TO BE SAFE, AND TO BE KIND.

AND IF OUR STUDENTS CAN LIVE UP TO THOSE EXPECTATIONS, THEY'LL BE BETTER CITIZENS.

IT'S FUN TO GO TO SCHOOL WHEN YOU KNOW THAT YOU'RE GOING TO LEARN SOMETHING TODAY, AND THAT YOU'RE LOVED AND CARED FOR AND YOU FEEL SAFE.

AND SO IT'S JUST A HAPPY ENVIRONMENT. I'VE BEEN TEACHING HERE 30 YEARS, AND WHEN I WAS FIRST HIRED HERE, MR. JOHN, CAPTAIN SAID TO ME, WELCOME TO THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH.

AND THAT INSTILLED IN ME THAT WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE'RE HAPPY HERE.

AND WE ARE. WE'RE A FAMILY. WE BELIEVE IN. A UNIVERSITY MINDSET BEGINS HERE, AND THAT ALLOWS OUR STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE EXPOSED TO COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, WHICH SHAPES THEIR FUTURE.

AND SO OUR GOAL IS TO BUILD STUDENT FUTURES THROUGH ACADEMICS, ORGANIZATION, AND JUST EXPOSURE, AND THAT WE ALL BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF WHAT WE DO HERE AT SHADOW HILLS TO GET STUDENTS WHERE THEY NEED TO GO.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE REALLY FOCUSED ON IS OK AND ALLOWING STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE CHALLENGED AT THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL LEVELS.

AND I THINK THAT'S REALLY HELPED GET STUDENTS TO WHERE THEY NEED TO BE.

OUR GOAL IS TO PREPARE OUR STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE.

SO RIGHT NOW WE WANT TO GET THEM PREPARED FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO CHOOSE WHATEVER PATH THEY WANT TO, PREPARING THEM THROUGH ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS, THROUGH OPPORTUNITIES TO BE EXPOSED TO WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL WALLS.

LAST YEAR, SHADOW HILLS ELEMENTARY WAS RECOGNIZED AS A CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL, AN HONOR THAT REFLECTS OUR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS TO NARROW THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP AND ENSURE THE SUCCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS. THIS RECOGNITION WAS NOT THE RESULT OF A SINGLE PROGRAM OR INITIATIVE, BUT OF AN ENTIRE SCHOOL COMMUNITY WORKING TOGETHER WITH PURPOSE AND CARE.

AND WE CONTINUE TO BUILD ON THAT MOMENTUM. ONE AREA THAT I'M ESPECIALLY PROUD TO HIGHLIGHT IS THE PROGRESS OF OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS, AS REFLECTED IN THIS YEAR'S DASHBOARD 63.5% OF OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS MADE PROGRESS.

REPRESENTING AN INCREASE OF 20.4% FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR.

I'M OFTEN ASKED, WHAT ARE WE DOING TO ACHIEVE THIS KIND OF GROWTH? AND THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE IT'S THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.

AT SHADOW HILLS, OUR STAFF COMES TOGETHER EACH DAY TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN PURPOSEFUL AND MEANINGFUL WAYS.

THIS COLLECTIVE COMMITMENT IS WHAT MAKES OUR SCHOOL SUCH A SPECIAL AND TRULY HAPPY PLACE TO LEARN.

SIMPLY PUT, OUR PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE AND THEIR DEDICATION TO OUR STUDENT.

SUCCESS IS EVIDENT IN EVERYTHING THEY DO. AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE MISS REYES TO COME FORWARD AND SHARE A FEW WORDS.

A FAMILY ORIENTED SCHOOL WHERE HEARTS TRULY MEET.

MAKING EVERY HELLO WARM AND EVERY GOODBYE SWEET.

SO IMPACTFUL IN LESSONS BOTH BIG AND SMALL. WITH TEACHERS COMPASSIONATE ANSWERING EVERY CALL.

THE HALLS FEEL FRIENDLY. THE MOMENTS FEEL MAGICAL EACH DAY.

FILLED WITH GROWTH THAT'S BRIGHT AND POSITIVE.

STUDENTS STAND TENACIOUS, REACHING HIGH. STANDING TALL.

BEING NICE AND WARM IS THE RULE FOR US ALL. IT'S SIMPLY HUXHAM HOW EACH CHILD CAN SHINE SO UNIQUE IN THEIR TALENTS, THEIR DREAMS, AND THEIR TIME TOGETHER. WE LEARN, WE LAUGH AND SUCCEED, BUILDING A STRONG AND CARING COMMUNITY.

INDEED, AND I AM VERY PROUD OF THE COMMUNITY WE HAVE BUILT AT SHADOW HILLS.

AS MR. FISHER SAID, IT TRULY TAKES A TEAM TO ACHIEVE THE LEVEL OF SUCCESS THAT WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE.

HE'S ALREADY MENTIONED SIGNIFICANT FIGURES LIKE OUR BILINGUAL AID, OUR MULTILINGUAL PROGRAM SPECIALIST, BUT ALSO OUR INTERVENTION SUPPORT TEACHERS, MISS NANCY AGUIRRE AND MISS BELƉN VERA.

HER AID IN TRULY MAKING IT CLEAR TO EVERY SINGLE STUDENT, INCLUDING OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS, WHAT THE EXPECTATIONS ARE FOR THEM AND SHARING CLARITY ON EVERYTHING THAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO LEAVE OUR SCHOOL HAVING PUT INTO THEIR TOOL BELT. SO WE ARE VERY HAPPY TO SHARE THAT SHADOW HILLS IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE HAPPIEST PLACES ON EARTH BECAUSE OF THE COMMUNITY THAT HAS BUILT IT.

I MEAN, I KNOW ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS ARE AMAZING, BUT THIS WAS JUST SUCH A PHENOMENAL EXPERIENCE TO SEE THE DEEP LEARNING THAT WAS HAPPENING TOO. AND I KNOW WE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY AFTER WE DID OUR DAY AS PRINCIPAL OF THE DAY, IT WAS HALF OF A DAY.

AND THEN WE GOT TO COME BACK HERE AND HAVE A LUNCH AND A DEBRIEF SESSION.

AND GOT TO SHARE JUST LIKE ABOUT OUR, ALL OF OUR EXPERIENCES.

AND I SHARED WITH MY FRIENDS THERE, YOU KNOW, I WALKED INTO A KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOM AND THEY WERE GIVING ORAL PRESENTATIONS IN FRONT OF THEIR PEERS. GUYS LIKE THIS IS HAPPENING IN KINDERGARTEN. SO DON'T SAY THAT WE'RE NOT DOING AMAZING THINGS HERE BECAUSE WE ARE EVEN AT THE LOWEST LEVELS, BUT REALLY GIVING STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITIES TO THRIVE AND SHINE AND CHALLENGING THEM.

I SAW A RIGOROUS LEARNING HAPPENING. I EVEN GOT TO SIT IN ON A GRADE LEVEL MEETING, WHICH TOOK ME BACK TO MY DAYS AS A TEACHER, AND IT WAS REMINISCENT AND FUN, BUT JUST GETTING TO SIT AND HEAR THEIR IDEAS AND INPUT AND ENCOURAGE THEM.

JUST TO KEEP DOING THE AMAZING WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING.

SO A HUGE SHOUT OUT TO MAPLE ELEMENTARY, THE STAFF, THE LEADERSHIP THERE.

BUT THIS YEAR, I EXPERIENCED IT AS A PARENT AND I'M GOING TO TELL YOU AND RODRIGO OWES ME, BUT I HAD TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF A PARENT WHO LOST A CHILD.

AND I DON'T THINK THAT ANY PARENT SHOULD EVER HAVE TO BURY THEIR CHILDREN.

YOU KNOW, THE LIFE IS ABOUT, YOU KNOW, MY PARENTS ME BURYING MY PARENTS AND MY KIDS BURYING ME AND THEIR KIDS BURYING THEM.

AND NOT ONLY JUST THOSE IMPACTED FROM THE SIDE OF DEATH, BUT THINKING ABOUT THE SIDE OF THE INDIVIDUAL WHO MAY HAVE CAUSED THAT AND THE RIPPLE EFFECTS THAT THAT HAS. AND SO IF YOU'VE NEVER GONE THROUGH THAT EVERY 15 MINUTES PROGRAM, IT IS INCREDIBLE.

SUMMIT. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE WAS A REAL LIFE EMERGENCY THAT HAPPENED ON THAT SCENE THE DAY THAT SUMMIT HAD IT.

AND MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE PERSON THAT WAS LEADING THAT PROGRAM IS ONE OF OUR ALUMNI.

AND SO IT WAS GREAT TO SEE JUST ONE OF OUR OWN ALUMNI COME BACK TO THEIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND JUST GUIDE THESE STUDENTS HANDS TO UNDERSTANDING THE FINE ARTS, UNDERSTANDING ACTING. THAT WAS JUST IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE. I WAS REALLY GRATEFUL TO BE A PART OF THAT. I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO FOR PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY, OUR FIRST EVER PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY AT FONTANA UNIFIED.

THAT WAS, THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN. I GOT TO GO TO LAURA HUERTA AND TO ECHO THE COMMENTS OF MY COLLEAGUE MISS HOLLY MANN, OUR KIDS NOWADAYS ARE SO MUCH SMARTER, I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP UP LIKE THESE KIDS ARE GENIUSES, ESPECIALLY AT DOLORES HUERTA. A LOT OF THEIR ESSAYS, LIKE I SAW A FIRST GRADE CLASS WHERE THEY HAD LIKE FIVE PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE ESSAYS, BUT IT WASN'T JUST IN ENGLISH. THEY ALSO HAD IT IN SPANISH.

AND THEN THEY ALSO HAD AN ANALYSIS ATTACHED TO IT. AND I'M LIKE, OKAY, THAT'S, THAT'S, THAT'S REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

AND IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE ALL THAT. AND IT WAS JUST GREAT TO SEE THE PASSION IN A LOT OF THE TEACHERS EYES WHEN THEY'RE TEACHING OUR STUDENTS.

LIKE, I WISH EVERYONE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE WHAT I GOT TO SEE BECAUSE LIKE OUR TEACHERS THERE, THEY ARE SO COMMITTED AND THEY ARE SO PASSIONATE.

AND YOU COULD JUST TELL EVEN FROM THE WAY THAT THE STUDENTS ARE ACTING.

I'VE TOURED A COUPLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. SOME KIDS ARE A LITTLE BRATTY AND. BUT AT DOLORES, WHERE THE KIDS WERE SO GOOD, THEY WERE SO WELL BEHAVED AND YOU CAN TELL IT WAS GENUINE.

YOU COULD TELL IT WASN'T JUST BECAUSE THE PRINCIPAL'S WALKING AROUND. YOU COULD TELL THAT THERE'S JUST A TRUE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TEACHERS AND THE STUDENTS. SO THAT WAS GREAT TO SEE. I ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE FONTANA BASEBALL OPENING CELEBRATION AT VETERANS PARK.

SOME UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS APRIL 11TH FROM 10 A.M.

TO 12:30 P.M.. WE HAVE OUR SPECIAL NEEDS RESOURCE AND FAMILY DAY.

THIS IS GOING TO BE HOSTED BY THE FONTANA POLICE DEPARTMENT.

THEY HAVE A LOT OF COOL TRAINS AND DIFFERENT VENDORS GO.

WE HOST PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT SOCIALS.

WE HAVE PARENT TRAININGS AND MEETINGS FOR EVENTS AND UPDATES IN THE AREA OF PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT.

ON NOVEMBER 14TH WE HAD OUR FALL SOCIAL. IT WAS BINGO GAME NIGHT.

IT WAS HELD AT BEECH ELEMENTARY. IT POURED. IT WAS THE FIRST DAY THAT IT POURED ON US AFTER SUMMER.

AND IF YOU GUYS REMEMBER THAT SURPRISING RAIN, IT POURED ON US.

BUT WE STILL HAD 70 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE. MR. BAKER WAS THERE TO SUPPORT MR. BAKER. YOUR UNWAVERING SUPPORT SINCE I JOINED THIS COMMITTEE HAS BEEN SUPER VALUABLE.

AND THE EXAMPLE THAT I HAD RECENTLY WAS THAT THERE'S A GROUP OF STUDENTS THAT ARE GOING TO BE TAKING A FIELD TRIP UP TO, I THINK, THE JESSE TURNER CENTER FROM FONTANA MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND THE COST FOR THAT TRIP WAS LIKE $800 JUST TO TAKE THE KIDS FROM FROM FONTANA MIDDLE SCHOOL TO JESSE TURNER. AND THAT, TO ME WAS A LITTLE MIND BOGGLING.

AND SO WHEN I SAW THIS ITEM ON THE AGENDA I WANTED TO PULL IT JUST TO KIND OF GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AS TO WHY THE COSTS ARE WHAT THEY ARE.

BECAUSE TO ME, I MEAN, $800 TO GO FROM, FROM FONTANA MIDDLE SCHOOL TO JESSE TURNER CENTER, THAT'S A LOT OF MONEY. AND SO I GUESS I JUST WANT TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHY THAT IS, WHAT THE BREAKDOWN LOOKS LIKE. BUT THEN ALSO THINGS LIKE I KNOW THAT AT SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL, THE BASEBALL TEAM, THE PARENTS ARE TRYING TO GET LIKE A CHARTER BUS FOR THEIR KIDS TO GET THEM OVER TO THEIR NEXT GAME AND THEY'RE BEING TOLD, WELL, YOU HAVE TO USE A SPECIFIC VENDOR. YOU HAVE TO USE A SPECIFIC VENDOR THAT THE DISTRICT HAS ALREADY APPROVED.

FAIR, I UNDERSTAND THAT. I THINK THAT'S THAT'S FINE.

BUT THEN WHEN THEY TRY TO USE ONE OF THE VENDORS THAT WERE PROVIDED ON THE LIST OF VENDORS, THEY WERE TOLD, NO, YOU CAN'T USE THIS ONE. YOU HAVE TO USE THE ONE THAT THE DISTRICT'S ALREADY SELECTED. AND SO I'M JUST TRYING TO UNDERSTAND BETTER ON HOW THIS WORKS, HOW THE MECHANISM OF FUNDING WORKS, JUST BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, TO ME AS A DISTRICT, YOU KNOW, WE OWE A FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITY TO OUR RESIDENTS TO MAKE SURE WE'RE NOT WASTING TAXPAYER DOLLARS. AND IF WE'RE SPENDING $800 TO GO FROM FONTANA MIDDLE SCHOOL TO JESSE TURNER CENTER, I MEAN, THAT'S A THAT'S A BIG COST. AND IF WE COULD SAVE PARENTS FROM A $4,000 CHARTER BUS TRIP TO RIALTO HIGH SCHOOL FROM SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL AND FIND A TRIP FOR $1,000, THAT TO ME MAKES MORE SENSE. AND SO I JUST WANT TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THAT IF I CAN GET SOME CLARIFICATION FROM STAFF.

AND SOMETIMES IT'S OVERTIME. SO ALL THOSE COSTS ARE ADDED UP AND SITES KNOW IN ADVANCE.

SO THAT'S PART OF THEIR SITE ALLOCATION AND PART IN THAT THEY ARE ALLOCATED FOR THE YEAR FOR BUDGETING.

AND THAT ISN'T SOMETHING THE DISTRICT FUNDS, BUT THEY STEP OUT THE COSTS OF WHY IT ADDS UP TO 800.

IT MAY SEEM LIKE A LOT, BUT WHEN YOU BREAK IT DOWN, HOURLY RATE, OVERTIME RATE, AMOUNT OF STUDENTS, AMOUNT OF BUSSES THAT ARE NEEDED. SO THE BIGGEST PART OF THIS COST IS JUST THE FACT THAT WE HAVE STAFFING.

THEY HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE STUDENTS TO BE. COULD BE.

I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S PRIMARILY THIS ONE. I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG THEY WERE GOING TO BE UP THERE. I ACTUALLY DON'T KNOW EXACTLY HOW MANY BUSSES. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE THE DETAILS OF THAT. MR.. YES. AND I ALSO KNOW THAT THEY HAVE A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT MODES OF TRANSPORTATION.

YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE THE BUSSES, THEY HAVE THE VANS, THEY HAVE THE SHORTER BUSSES. AND, AND I KNOW THAT THEY'RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPAND THEIR PARTNERSHIPS, ESPECIALLY WITH STUDENTS.

SO THIS IS JUST ME THINKING OUT LOUD. WHY NOT? MATTER OF FACT, LET ME LET ME BACK UP. LET ME ASK THE QUESTION, HAVE WE CONSIDERED REACHING OUT TO SOME OF OUR PARTNERS, LIKE OMNITRANS, FOR EXAMPLE, TO SEE IF THERE'S A WAY TO WORK AROUND THE COST.

AND SO IT'S JUST SOMETHING THAT I THINK IT'S AT LEAST WORTH EXPLORING.
