SO REALLY FOCUSING ON THE WHOLE CHILD APPROACH.
WHAT IS IT THAT OUR KIDS NEEDED TO BECOME THRIVING INDIVIDUALS AND HAVE A VOICE AS THEY PROGRESSED THROUGHOUT? SO A FEW YEARS BACK, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE NOTICED IS WE HAVE A VERY HIGH PERCENTAGE OF ENGLISH LEARNER STUDENTS WHO COME IN TO ASSESS SEQUOYAH.
IT'S ROUGHLY ANYWHERE BETWEEN 25 TO 30% YEAR TO YEAR.
WHEN I ENTERED SEQUOYAH, I WAS AN ENGLISH LEARNER, AND NOW I'M IN.
THE DLI PROGRAM IS VERY FUN TO DO AND VERY INTERESTING TO LEARN.
THAT REALLY MAKES ME FEEL THAT I'M LIKE PROUD OF MYSELF, THAT I'M LEARNING INTO DIFFERENT LANGUAGES, ENGLISH AND SPANISH. BUT LIKE THEN I'M HONORING MY SPANISH FAMILY BY USING THEIR LANGUAGE AT SCHOOL.
SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE DID IS WE BROUGHT OUR TEAM TOGETHER, OUR ELL TEACHERS, AND THEY REALLY WORKED TO COLLABORATE AND MAKE SURE THE KIDS ARE PLACED ACCORDINGLY. AND IF WE NEED TO MAKE CHANGES OR ADJUSTMENTS BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS ARE PERFORMING SUPER HIGH, WE DO THAT.
IN ADDITION TO THAT, WE REALLY LOOK AT GOAL SETTING WITH THEM AND INCLUDING THEM IN THEIR PROCESS OF WHERE AM I? WHERE DO I NEED TO GO TO? AM I ALMOST THERE? AND THEY GET TO TRACK THEIR OWN LEARNING.
AND I THINK THAT'S MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

AND WE'RE TALKING ABOUT POPULATION OF STUDENTS.
WE HAVE ABOUT 5000 STUDENTS IN OUR DISTRICT ON IEPS RIGHT NOW, STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, AND ABOUT 70% OF ALL OF THOSE STUDENTS ARE SERVED IN GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSES.

17 TOTAL PROGRAMS THAT WE OFFER FOR STUDENTS THAT NEED SPECIALIZED SUPPORT.
IF YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS AS FAR AS SCHOOLS, WE HAVE ABOUT 30 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
SO WITH 17 PROGRAMS, WE OBVIOUSLY CANNOT PROVIDE THE FULL CONTINUUM OF PROGRAMS THAT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF OUR SCHOOL SITES, BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH STUDENTS THAT REQUIRE THAT LEVEL OF SUPPORT AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL.
AND IF YOU LOOK AT THE NEXT SLIDE, THIS IS FROM FIRST GRADE THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.
WE HAVE ABOUT 31 PROGRAMS. SO AGAIN, FOR OUR STUDENTS THAT HAVE MORE SIGNIFICANT NEEDS.
IF WE HAVE 31 PROGRAMS FROM FIRST GRADE TO FIFTH GRADE.
SO WHAT WE DID WAS WE TOOK THOSE PROGRAMS THAT WE NEED FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND WE CONDENSED THEM AT A FEW SITES SO THAT THOSE CHILDREN COULD STAY AT THAT ONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR THEIR ENTIRE ELEMENTARY CAREER, STARTING AT FIRST GRADE.
SO WHEN MR. BAKER WAS SHARING WITH YOU GUYS THAT WE WENT FROM 21 PARTIAL PROGRAMS WHEN HE WAS TALKING ABOUT IS WE USED TO HAVE LIKE MAYBE FIRST GRADE THROUGH SECOND GRADE CLASS AT SCHOOL A, AND THEN THOSE KIDS AFTER SECOND GRADE WOULD HAVE TO SHIFT TO ANOTHER SCHOOL TO COMPLETE THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE AND THEN SOMETIMES MOVE AGAIN FOR FIFTH GRADE.
SO WHAT YOU CAN SEE IS THAT BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF PROGRAMS, WE WERE HAVING THAT DILEMMA, AND NOW WE'RE NEXT YEAR HAPPY TO REPORT THAT WE'RE DOWN TO ZERO.
SO THAT'S A VIEW OF OUR ELEMENTARY. NOW AS FAR AS SECONDARY GOES, WE DON'T HAVE THAT CHALLENGE AT SECONDARY BECAUSE ALL OF OUR SECONDARY SCHOOLS OFFER BOTH RESOURCE PROGRAMS AND WHAT WE CALL APPLIED PROGRAMS. SO STUDENTS THAT NEED SPECIAL ED CLASS FOR CORE CLASSES THAT'S OFFERED AT ALL OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS AS WELL AS OUR HIGH SCHOOLS.
AND THEN AT OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, WE HAVE THE FULL CONTINUUM OF ALL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS.
AND THEN FINALLY, FOR OUR ADULT TRANSITION PROGRAMS, AS YOU GUYS KNOW, LAST YEAR WE HAD TO CLOSE THE OLD BIRCH, AND WE HOUSED TWO OF OUR TRANSITION ADULT TRANSITION PROGRAMS AT THE OLD BIRCH.
AND WE HAD TO RELOCATE THOSE CLASSES TEMPORARILY ON THE SOUTH SIDE.
WE'RE NOW RELOCATING ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS BACK TO THE NORTH.
SO NOW I'M HAPPY TO REPORT THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE ACCESS TO ALL OF OUR ADULT TRANSITION PROGRAMS IN THE NORTH, IN THE MIDDLE OF FONTANA, AS WELL AS IN THE SOUTH.

AND FROM WHAT WE GATHERED IN ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY MEETINGS THAT WE HAD, OR KIND OF LIKE SCHOOL MEETINGS THAT WE HAD A LOT OF THE, THE PARENTS HAVE BEEN INPUTTING THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO HAVE TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN BROUGHT BACK TO CHAPARRAL TO SEE IF WE CAN, YOU KNOW, DRIVE FOR THOSE PARENTS THAT HAVE THEIR KIDS GOING TO DIFFERENT SCHOOLS AT THAT TIME, BECAUSE ONCE THEY GET INTO THAT AGE GROUP, THEY'RE HAVING TO TRAVEL TO THE NEIGHBORING SCHOOLS RATHER THAN THE HOME SCHOOL WHERE THEY HAVE THEIR OLDER CHILDREN AT.
SO THAT'S A CONCERN THAT CAME UP. AND ASIDE FROM THAT, I'VE ENJOYED BEING PART OF THE PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION. I'M IN MY SECOND YEAR OF DOING THAT.

I'M WITH SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY.
IT IS INTENDED TO FOCUS ON BRINGING TRANSPORTATION, SAFETY, EDUCATION AND RESOURCES HERE TO OUR FONTANA SCHOOLS AND OTHER SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. THIS MATTERS BECAUSE WHEN STUDENTS CAN WALK OR BIKE SAFELY TO SCHOOL, THEY ARRIVE HEALTHIER, MORE FOCUSED AND READY TO LEARN. IT ALSO REDUCES TRAFFIC CONGESTION AT SCHOOLS AND GIVES FAMILY MORE TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS, ESPECIALLY WHEN DRIVING SINGLE OCCUPANCY VEHICLES IS NOT ALWAYS AN OPTION.
UNDERSTANDABLY, MANY FAMILIES DO NOT FEEL SAFE WALKING AND BIKING OR USING TRANSIT, ESPECIALLY GIVEN OUR COMPLEX TRANSPORTATION ENVIRONMENTS, WHICH ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY MORE COMPLEX AND CHALLENGING GIVEN THE INCREASE IN BIKES AND SCOOTERS.
BETWEEN 2015 AND 2025, THE CITY OF FONTANA AND THE CITY ALONE, WE LOST 25 CHILDREN WHILE WALKING OR BIKING, AND NEARLY 400 WERE INJURED. EVERY ONE OF THOSE FATALITIES OCCURRED WITHIN A QUARTER MILE OF A SCHOOL.
80% OF THE 400 INJURIES ALSO OCCURRED WITHIN A QUARTER MILE OF A SCHOOL.
DATA TELLS US THAT THE GREATEST SAFETY RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES EXIST AROUND OUR SCHOOLS.
SBCTA IS PROPOSING A PROGRAM CALLED STUDENT SAFE THREE 60 THAT WOULD INCLUDE HANDS ON TRAFFIC GARDENS, A COUPLE OF WHICH HAVE ALREADY BEEN INSTALLED IN SOME FONTANA SCHOOLS.
UPDATED MULTI-MODAL TRAFFIC SAFETY EDUCATION, EDUCATOR TRAINING AND INSTITUTION INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES AND DEVELOPMENT TO POTENTIALLY HAVE A TOOLKIT THAT SCHOOLS MAY OR MAY NOT USE THAT THEY COULD USE TO TRY TO REGISTER BIKES THAT COME INTO THEIR LOCKERS TO SHOW THAT THE STUDENTS HAVE A HELMET AND KNOW HOW TO BIKE SAFELY TO SCHOOL. WE RECOGNIZE SCHOOLS ARE ALREADY STRETCHED THIN.
THE REPORT ON THE BUDGETS IS VERY SAD, BUT AMAZING THINGS YOU GUYS DO WITH THE LIMITED RESOURCES YOU HAD, AND IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THAT TONIGHT. SO WE WANT TO TRY TO HELP SAVE KIDS AND GET THEM THE EDUCATION.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, THOSE RESOURCES THAT CAN GET BROUGHT BACK FOR A LOT OF THESE CONFERENCES DO END UP BEING A RETURN ON AN INVESTMENT.
AND I BELIEVE THAT IT IS PERTINENT UPON THIS BOARD AND ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY, FOR THAT MATTER, TO BE TRANSPARENT WITH THE PUBLIC AND HOW DOLLARS ARE SPENT, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO MONEY THAT INVOLVES OUR STUDENTS.

AND AS SOMEONE WHO SPENT MANY OF MY HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE IN THE BAND AND SPENT MANY YEARS AFTER AS A DRUM INSTRUCTOR AT FONTANA HIGH SCHOOL, I KNOW FIRSTHAND THAT MARCHING BAND IS MORE THAN LEARNING MUSIC. IT TEACHES CONFIDENCE, COLLABORATION, AND ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. AND I ALSO APPRECIATE MOST THAT OUR STUDENTS WILL EARN PE CREDIT WHILE PARTICIPATING IN MARCHING BAND.
AND FOR ME, THE MOST EXCITING PART ABOUT THIS REALLY IS THAT OVER TIME, I ENVISION THAT THIS NEW COURSE WILL CREATE A FEEDER PROGRAM INTO OUR HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND PROGRAMS AND JUST OVERALL GROW MUSIC AND GROW OUR MUSIC PROGRAMS ALL THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.
AND SO I JUST ALSO WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO OUR TEACHING AND LEARNING DIVISION, MUSIC EDUCATORS, AND THE SECONDARY ACADEMY ACADEMIC AND ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR BRINGING FORWARD THIS COURSE TO OUR STUDENTS.
